That time when I used to climb #03 | Osmeña Peak

2014 was the year I was supposed to graduate college but no, I didn't follow suit with the rest of my batchmates. I was a working student, working as a call center agent, and had a lot of failing marks on my grades. I cared less about the outcome of my educational endeavors while using every bit of my savings to go up the mountains.

This brought me back to a fun memory of a climb at Osmeña Peak. Osmena Peak is the highest point of Cebu island sitting at 1,013 m above sea level. Most tourists, climbers, and even locals have definitely visited this place at one point in their lives. It's a popular destination for everyone if you want a picturesque view of nature. Besides camping, one can also traverse from Osmeña Peak to Kawasan Falls which we just did with my friends.

Jump off Point to Osmeña Peak

We started our adventure at about 7:00 am. It was a 4-hour bus ride from Cebu City to Dalaguete, Cebu. Upon arriving, we agreed to have our lunch at a local eatery. After buying other supplies, we left the jump-off trail at 1:00 pm and started our trek. While some prefer to drive or ride a motorcycle to the nearest drop-off at Osmeña Peak, we opted to enjoy the scenic route.

Although relatively easy to reach, Osmeña Peak can be unforgiving in terms of heat. It was hot indeed but I'm just thankful that the sky was clear. I'd rather climb on a sunny hot day than a rainy one. We got some great views of the mountain ranges and green luscious vegetation surrounding us.

There were a few locals we came across while heading our way but one boy struck a chord in my bones. We walked alongside this guy and offered to carry two bottles from him. We parted our ways when we had to take another path. This path was now narrower and lead us to the middle of some cabbage farm then between some "hills" until it finally brought us to Osmeña's Peak camping grounds.

Camping at Osmeña Peak

We arrived at the campsite around 3:00 pm. We were sure that other climbers will be arriving soon so we had to mark our territory first. We immediately scouted for a good spot to pitch our tents. After doing so, we then were able to relax and enjoyed the remaining hours before nightfall basking in nature's beauty.

What was more memorable for this specific climb was seeing my cousins up in the mountains as well. They were with that school club which I quit. I knew they would be coming because they invited me beforehand to go with them but I declined. Good thing, my gang decided to climb on the same day and on the same mountain. So it was really good seeing them up there at the same time.

I went with my cousins to the peak and just submerged ourselves with the breathtaking view there. Here are some photos of me at the highest point of Cebu, Philippines:

A view of the camping grounds from the peak

I went back to my gang and waited for the skies to go dark. We had our dinner although there were no drinking sessions since our crazy friends Aldrin and Dale were not with us. And we were saving up our energy for the next day's traverse. Although we spent some 2-3 hours outside our tents for a good soulful talk with each other. It was damn cold up and when the cold wind was no longer bearable, we decided to call it a night.

Traversing from Osmeña Peak to Kawasan Falls

We woke up early that morning about 5:00 am. We quickly cooked and ate our breakfast and finished packing up asap. If I'm not mistaken, we were able to leave the campsite around 6:30 am. We had to be early because we need to reach the other side of Cebu as early as possible. We always don't know what other things might happen or the weather might just change all suddenly. So we bid goodbye to Osmeña Peak and started our 5-hour trek.

The wind was chilly and the fog was obstructing our view. Nonetheless, we still manage to follow a narrow trail. We came across huge pine trees which was a delight for me because we normally don't have this in our place. It felt like I was in another country. The traverse started out easy and the surrounding nature was comforting. We were passing through mountain ranges and we didn't see other hikers or locals in the first 2 hours.

We then managed to reach a water source where we filled our bottles. However, there were locals and children as well waiting in line to have their galloons of water to be filled. With this, we got curious and asked them about their situation. It turned out that this water supply system was the only source of clean drinking water for most of the locals up there in the mountains. Some of these kids came from other neighboring villages which would take them 1-2 hours to walk and another 1-2 hours to get back to their place. And this saddened my heart.

We left that spot with humble hearts and continued further down the path. The rest of the trail was "fun" passing through "hills", crop farms, and reaching a slope with the ground having loose rocks. We did manage to stop a couple of times to regain our spirit and energies.

After 6 hours, we reached Kawasan falls but I regret to inform you photo taking was no longer done because our phones and camera already ran out of batteries. But even my friends were no longer interested in taking photos of this famous waterfalls for we were already exhausted at this point and dying to go home.

We ended our climb with a sumptuous meal at a local eatery, manage to change into clean clothes, and rode the bus going back to the city which took us another 5 hours of travel. This was my first and last traverse in Osmeña peak and it was a memorable one.

What a beautiful trip you shared, with so many pictures. I really enjoyed reading your story and the images, the Nature is so different looking then where I am and then the part with the kids waiting by the water supply really made me just stop. Stop reading and made me realize once again how a lot of people still live...and how we forget to be thankfull in our life. I never had to go further than the sink for water... I give thanks for the running water I have in my home today 🙏 and I hope somehow the Universe makes it easier for these kids and the people there. Thank you for sharing! 🙏

Your kind words melts my heart! Its amazing really how mother earth is so beautiful and every single place we go is unique and full of stories to be told! and thats what I love about traveling because it opens our eyes to a lot of things we dont know and provide us insights about life.

I may never know what happened to that boy or the villagers there but we could only hope that they manage to survive their day-to-day life there. And this helps us to be humble and grateful for what we have.

Thank you @didivelikova for dropping by! You have a good heart. 😊

It's so nice to chill and stay until sun set at osmeña peak, question is it very cold when you where there overnight. cause Everytime we/I, go there and bring guest's it so cold 🥶 freezing time around 3pm till sunset and also when raining season 🥶

Haha. Its freaking cold every mountain I climb @sabanalchristian! But this was not the coldest I've experienced yet.

Perhaps we can climb then freedive the next day! haha.

Osmena Peak is a must place to visit/hike when in Cebu. The view is so exquisite from the peak!

True! Osmena peak is the go-to for all travelers around the world. World class kaya ta. Charot.

hahahhaah. way char, tinuod jd.

Thank you for bringing us to the place! Haven't visited down south so rely lang us sa mga pics.

Grabe it makes us super excited that one day we will be able to visit Cebu as we look on the blog post from the travellers nakak thrilled magbyahe.

Dito sa Manila area, either building or another building and mountains of... workload lang ang meron.

Hoeee! Magsabi kayo kapag makapasyal kayo dito ha. Ako na tourguide. Libre pa. Hahaha.

I always believe Cebu has it all. The mountains and the beach - all accessible from the city. So we are lucky.

true diyan sa manila! Ang layo ng mga travel destinations! I've stayed and been there as well. But was never been able to climb a mountain but perhaps in the future.

The photos of the little boy carried three bottles of water broke my heart. I had seen the same things in the mountainous area in Vietnam too. So kind of you guys offering to help him.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful photos. The places you hike through are beautiful. And about the heat, I could feel that too as I had done a 2-day mountain climbing in Vietnam.

Thank you for dropping by @dora381! I actually took a lot of photos of that little guy. It reminded me a lot of things but most especially to be humble and grateful for the things I have.

When i was in sapa, vietnam, I was really planning to climb Fansipan. I have done a lot of research, some good, some bad. In the end, I didn't push through since I was alone. perhaps on my next visit to Vietnam, you could bring me to the mountains.

You know about Fansipan? That's awesome girl. The mountain I mentioned actually is that one. You did the right thing it is not recommended to climb Fansipan alone. Next time, if we are both in vietnam, let's do it together

So much greenery! Gorgeous! Just to think that we can have access to water instantly makes you appreciate it so much more when you see others going the extra mile for it.

Agree with you on this! Most of us especially in the city whine when there is stoppage of water supply for a day, but those in the mountains had to go through so much just to have a few galloons for their day to day survival.

Yes, it is tough on them. This teaches us about gratitude. Daily gratitude for what we have!

Wow, those views are amazing. What a great outing you were able to have. I am hoping to get out next summer and get some hiking in myself. Nothing as spectacular as this though!

thank you @bozz.sports! There is still more to come! But its always an amazing view up in the mountains.

Which place are you from? and what mountain are looking at for your next hiking adventure?

I am from Michigan in the United States. The next mountain that I will likely be climbing is called Brockway Mountain up in the northern part of my state. It is a beautiful area. Either that or the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. They have some awesome hiking trails around there.

Well @bozz.sports! I would very much like to read your blog about it. Do tag me! I'm excited for you. I think I have an upcoming climb this november but its not yet fixed so hopefully it will go well too!

You always amaze me with your beautiful blog (That time when I used to climb series) @indayclara. The place is simply stunning and it made me wanna go to Osmena peak cause honestly, I've never been there. It also broke my heart to see those kids and the problem with access to clean drinking water. I just hope that it has improved today.

You have yet to read my traveling solo series! You'll be more amazed and inspired with the other places I've travelled to.

it made me wanna go to Osmena peak cause honestly, I've never been there.

Damn! You must while you are here in Cebu! then tell us all about it here. You don't really need to go there and do an overnight camping. you can also just do a dayhike.

Hi Claire, the trail to Osmena peak is beautiful regardless of how many times we travel to get there. Each visit is never the same but the surrounding areas are even more interesting to explore.

Hiking all the way to Kawasan I'm sure revealed so many stunning landscapes despite the challenge of getting there. That is far, wow! 😍

Whenever we had family or friends visiting, Osmena Peak was always included in our itinerary and one time I decided not to join them since the trail is pretty straightforward. I decided to walk on my own towards a lesser-known area. Walking is pleasant because of the cooler temperature and a bit of rain makes the experience even more fun.

I agree @discoveringarni! The trail was amazing as I remember it. There is something new every turn you make.

I decided to walk on my own towards a lesser-known area.

And we always end up in unexpected places when we do this! And about the rain, yes, it also makes the climb a fun experience and I had a few more stories to tell about climbing on a heavy rainfall. So stay tune!

I also bring my friends coming from other places to Osmena peak but only choosing the shorter way since most of them are not climbers.

Beautiful pictures and scenery. I love hiking but I confess I struggle with heights

Everyone have their own fears. I struggle with heights too when I'm on top of a tall building but mountains are different. Its one of my happy places!

I fell from vantage point when it was a little girl and I had to be rescued I remember myself holding on to a pine branch, so now sometimes it happens randomly sometimes I am okay but some others I get to conscious of the height and a freeze pity because I love hiking. I am on it as I am a person who likes the challenge herself

Such mountains are worth some poor school marks ❤️ Thanks so much for sharing your trip 🙌 Maybe you will go back soon?
