One Walk, Three (and a Half) Countries

Traveling in the European Union is simple. You can even walk across several countries without anyone stopping you for an identity check or anything like that. I don’t even carry my passport unless I am about to leave the EU borders – I usually travel light, just with cabin luggage. Anyway, the beauty of living in the safe part of the world lies in such details, like my recent walk, which spanned from Germany to Belgium, then the Netherlands, and back to Germany. Those are the three countries in the title. What about that half? Well, keep reading!

Nic nového pod sluncem, cestovat po Evropě je až směšně jednoduché, a navíc levné. V té západní vlaky úspěšně konkurují letadlům, v té (bývalé) východní je to tak nějak plichta s autobusy, pokud jde o rychlost a cenu. Takže reálně zdoláte zhruba sto kilometrů za hodinu. Ale pas nepotřebujete. A navíc můžete překročit hranice, kde si usmyslíte, což je pro většinu světa něco neuvěřitelného. Bloumat si jen tak přes hranice tří zemí? Nebo dokonce tří a půl zemí, jak naznačuje můj nadpis? Kdo to kdy slyšel! A jak je to s tou polovičkou, když už jsem to nakousl? Inu, to se dočtete, když mi dáte ještě tak dvě minuty. Mimochodem, ty tři země byly Německo, Belgie a Nizozemí.

I had a couple of hours to kill the day after the Hive Meetup in Aachen, and missing the well-known tripoint between the three countries would feel rather dumb, even though the weather was not much in my favor. So I took a city bus from Aachen to Vaals, a town that spans the borderline – you can’t tell where the border is. For a municipality of this size, Vaals boasts quite a pompous church, Saint Paul's Church. Don’t get misled by its classy Gothic appearance; the church is much younger than it pretends to be, built only about 130 years ago.

Po setkání v Cáchách jsem měl v neděli ráno trochu toho volného času. A vynechat trojstátí se mi nechtělo, když je to co by kamenem dohodil, i když mi počasí nebylo tak úplně nakloněno. Z Cách do nizozemského městečka Vaals jezdí autobus, městská linka. A že jste překročili hranici si vlastně ani nevšimnete. Největší dominantou zhruba desetitisícového Vaals je tenhle kostel Sv. Pavla, zhruba 130 let starý novogotický svatostánek. 

I passed by the church and continued south up the hill, heading straight to one of the many European tripoints – not that they are such a big deal nowadays when you can cross the borders anytime and anywhere. Still, as a reminder of the less friendly past, the tripoint is on a hill, and there are several view towers to observe the landscape, weather permitting. This is Wilhelminatoren, the Dutch viewpoint some 800 meters (1/2 mile) north of the tripoint, and as you can tell, I couldn’t see much from the top. I did give it a shot anyway.

V kostele jsem se ale nezastavil a pokračoval jsem do kopce, kde je jedno z mnoha evropských trojmezí. Ono to není nic extra neobvyklého, i my máme čtyři. Ale třeba Španělsko má dvě, a jen kousek od sebe. Překračování hranic už taky dobré dvě dekády není žádné velké dobrodružství. Ale tohle trojmezí pamatuje léta, kdy hranice existovaly. A tak asi nepřekvapí, že je na kopci, který býval o poznání méně přístupný než okolí. Tohle je holandská rozhledna Wilhelminatoren. Je zhruba 800 metrů na sever od skutečného trojmezí. A jak je vidět, bylo jasné, že z ní toho mnoho vidět nebude. Ale stejně jsem se podíval nahoru.

Definitely not a place for vertigo sufferers. Anyway, I took shelter in the restaurant since a brief shower arrived right when I set my feet on the ground, had a cup of coffee, dried off a bit, and continued. If I didn’t have a precise map, I’d have thought there were dozens of tripoints around; the closer I got, the more places suggested they were on the spot. All of them are pretty touristy, obviously.

Jak vidno, lidé trpící závratí by raději měli zůstat dole. A protože se schylovalo k dešti, který začal, jakmile jsem sestoupil zpátky na zem, zašel jsem do místní restaurace a u kávy přeháňku přečkal. Za nějakých deset minut dopršelo, a tak jsem mohl zdolat ten zbývající kousek. Byl plný turistických pastí a všemožných falešných trojmezí.

These three flagpoles imitate the tripoint well, but they are still some 50 meters away, and the spot itself is humble compared to them – just a borderstone and three small flags. Yes, this is it – what else would you expect from a bit of land where three imaginary lines meet?

Třeba tyhle tři vlajkové stožáry. Člověk by řekl, že trojmezí bude přesně mezi nimi, ale ono ne. Ve skutečnosti je ještě o nějakých padesát metrů dál. O poznání nenápadnější. Jeden hraniční kámen a tři vlajky okolo. Na druhou stranu, jak by asi mělo takové trojstátí vypadat?

Anyway, I passed the King Baudouin Tower, a Belgian viewpoint, as I could hardly see anything more than a few minutes ago. Instead, I headed to discover something most others would overlook: the half-country.

Vyhlídkové věži krále Baudouina I. Belgického jsem se nicméně vyhnul, jeden zbytečný výšlap už jsem nedlouho předtím absolvoval. Ale bylo tu něco jiného, co mě lákalo. Něco, co většina návštěvníků tohohle trojmezí přehlédne - ona půlzemě. Anglicky je celá to slovní hříčka vtipná, ale co už.

Once upon a time, this place used to be a quadripoint. A thin strip of land belonged to Prussia from 1815 to 1918. Prussia lost WWI and was subsequently de facto incorporated into the Weimar Republic and then divided among the two post-WWII Germanies. Yet you can trace its borders here – and that’s what I intended. Old Prussian border stones are scattered in the woods, and freaks like me can still find them. Here are the two I discovered. Well, they don’t look spectacular, but it still made my day – and searching for them felt way better than trying some touristy things around the tripoint.

Tohle místo totiž bývalo čtyřmezím. A to už je vzácnost i  na Evropu. Mezi roky 1815 a 1918 tu patřil pás země Prusku. To bylo po první světové válce de facto připojeno k Výmarské republice, a po té druhé rozděleno mezi obě Německa, ale to už je jiný příběh. Ale sto let stará hranice je tu stále ještě patrná. Pruské hraniční kameny jsou rozeseté po lese. Dva se mi podařilo najít. Pravda, nevypadají nijak spektakulárně, není to jako fotka Yetiho nebo Lochnesky, ale mně to radost stejně udělalo. Větší, než všechny ty turistické pastičky kolem celého trojmezí.

The way back to Aachen, from where I took a train to Düsseldorf to catch a plane back home, led me through the German woods – I mean, you could hardly tell German woods from the Dutch or Belgian ones, but here they are. You can spot Bikepark Dreiländereck there. Despite the rather unpleasant weather, the walk was actually quite pleasant. Besides, when I reached Aachen, I met flocks of photogenic waterbirds willing to pose. But I’ve already covered that in my previous post.

Zpátky do Cách, odkud mi jel vlak na letiště v Düsseldorfu, už jsem šel německým lesem. Ne že by se snad nějak výrazně lišil od belgického nebo nizozemského lesa, potažmo toho českého, ale tady máte pár fotek. Možná vás na nich něco trkne do oko, to bude Bikepark Dreiländereck. A když jsem dorazil do města, potkal jsem mimo jiné fotogenické vodní ptactvo. Ale o tom už asi víte.
