Great Memories of this Wonderful Walk near the Mont Blanc - Join the hike ! ⛰

Hi everyone ! I hope you are doing well.

Today I wanted to share with you the memories of a two day hike on the border of Savoie and Italy. It was last year and we went with a small group of friends. I should point out straight away that all the photographs in this article are mine and were taken last summer.

We set off from much further down the valley and made our way up to a small artificial lake held back by a dam. A very impressive building as are most of these constructions.

Shortly after, we parked near the refuge that you can see on the map later in the article...

Once we arrived at the refuge, we had lunch there as the day was already well underway. Further up the mountain, several shepherds' dogs were herding sheep which, at this distance, were no bigger than crumbs on the green carpet of the mountain pastures.

One of these dogs came up to us while we were eating and I regret not taking a picture of it, for I had never seen such a muscular dog, all bone, nerve and stamina.

The meal was mostly protein, with charcuterie and cheese being the majority. We didn't eat in 5 minutes, but we didn't stay for hours either. We had a long drive ahead of us...!

IMG_8079.JPG

Speaking of roads, here's the one we came by, a small serpentine of beaten earth in the heart of the valley...

IMG_8080.JPG

IMG_8081.JPG

Then the climb began... On the picture below, you can see the place we were going to go through. This is the white area on the right. These are snowdrifts, remnants of snow from the previous winter. I don't think they lasted long after we passed through, because even at this altitude it was very warm.

IMG_8082.JPG

After the herd of cows typical of the region and which produce the milk from which Beaufort cheese is made, the slope became steeper and it started to climb seriously.

IMG_8084.JPG

IMG_8091.JPG

IMG_8092.JPG

We had already covered part of the route, at last we had gained some fields and height, but the day was far from over. The carpet of green that you can see in the foreground of the picture above is made of "monk's rhubarb" a wild species of the same name and just as edible. I didn't mind eating it as long as we came across it to take in some of the sugar along the walk.

IMG_8093.JPG

Then the real climb began ! The path was cut into the side of a cliff and I couldn't stop thinking about the men who had cut this pass all day long with rudimentary tools and in conditions that one can imagine were complicated...

IMG_8097.JPG

I am not afraid of heights, but I must admit that it was very impressive! By the way, below, you have the memorial plaque of a worker who died on the site... RIP and thanks for your work...

IMG_8098.JPG

IMG_8100.JPG

We're starting to see the end of it, but it's not over yet. We can feel that we are getting out of the rift and that we are gradually getting somewhere...

IMG_8103.JPG

... Indeed, here are some directional signs. Our little group came from the left, from the Gitaz refuge.

IMG_8104.JPG

Here we are, we finally arrived on a small plateau. The heat was really present and I think we would have given a lot to have a little shade, even if only for ten minutes !

IMG_8107.JPG

IMG_8110.JPG

Here is the scene that revealed itself to us as we emerged from the fault and the narrow cliff path. Well, here I tightened the frame a bit on this little chalet, but you will be able to see a bit further how great it was.

IMG_8112.JPG

IMG_8115.JPG

At the back of the chalet were the collapsed remains of another building, much larger and whose traces made me think of a ship's hull half-buried in the earth. This rekindled my desire for archaeology ^^

IMG_8117.JPG

IMG_8121.JPG

All around us, we were surrounded by streams and torrents that flowed down the slopes and hollows of the land. I can't help but feel how wonderful are the forces of Nature that have sculpted, minute after millennium, all the landscapes that surround us !

IMG_8122.JPG

We made a short stop in the shade of an uninhabited chalet but as happens at sea or in the mountains, the weather changed very quickly and we had to go back down to the refuge. You can see it slightly in the last photo, but I guarantee you that with the rain and the storm we had to endure an hour later, we were right to turn back !

It's another lesson, don't take on a stronger person than you are and the few times I've been too presumptuous in the wilderness, I've almost paid with my life... As you can see, this is not the case !

I remember when I was taking that last picture, I thought "But why do I have to go back down?" I really couldn't see the reason, and yet, I went back down... On the other hand, if one day, you don't hear from me anymore, that's where you should look for me :)

IMG_8125.JPG

Happy Saturday to you all !

See you soon <3

IMG_8080.JPG

IMG_8081.JPG

Puis l'ascension a commencé...

Là, ça a ravivé mes envies d'archéologie ^^

IMG_8117.JPG

IMG_8121.JPG

IMG_8125.JPG

Joyeux samedi à tous !

À très bientôt <3

thanks you a lot @livinguktaiwan and @pinmapple, I really like the mapping system and all the community involved here :)

I didn’t used it a lot since the beginning of my journey here, but it’s an awesome way to share special places and moments 💚

I think any trail near Mont Blanc would make it a great journey! That landscape is leaving everyone speechless for sure :)

that’s for sure, and I really hesitate me to stay there, silent months and peaceful skies and mountains for « only » company :)

be well <3

Love the green of the first pics. It looks like an amazing place to be! Amazing photos

me too 😊 it was indeed amazing !
sometimes miss more green, but we need to have that in past to hold, for me at least, but every human in general ...

thanks for passing by :)

Very nice pictures from your trip. Love the sign warning off falling although its sad to read, that someone lost their life there nonetheless. You made it look like there were very few people. Was this true or just very skilled photographing=?

I like it too, small human touches in the great wild ! It’s sad indeed, and I’m often thinking about him, nice also that they left a mark about !

That’s both, we didn’t cross the way of many other groups, but I also tried to leave the views cleared for Nature 🙃

be well <3

It seemed like the perfect setting to pass away, like atop a stunning mountain! Although it is heartbreaking to learn that someone lost their life there, I like the sign that warns against falling.

definitely !
On a mountain top, in the heart of a forest or lost in the ocean!

Yes, I often think about it... A kind of lesson because our lives are walking on the actions of those who have passed... Be well and have a nice week to come <3

I had an experience a few months back when I thought I was going to die in the forest. It seemed a good place to die as any, like atop a beautiful mountain! What an inspiring spot and such beautiful vistas. I love traces of buildings being consumed by the landscape too. Thanks for sharing.

It's true, and the few times I almost died (often in the water...) it made me a bit more humble each time :) always make the most of experiences - good or bad , I think it's a very human judgment haha !

Hey there well done, your photos are impressive and your post has gained a great response. Wishing you further progress.

hi @julianhorack ! thanks for your appreciation. Yes, I was pleasantly surprised !

I hope the same for you too :D

I would love to climb this kind of mountain too.. What a relaxing scenery. Full of green 😁

I really hesitate to go down, really want to spend one month - or more... - up there !

Spot the closest mountain near you !

For me the lake seems natural to me due to all that green natural vegetation and the mountain.

that's true, but the blue is still a bit bright and saturated :D

Beautiful. My wife and I did some hiking in this area a few years ago. We had a very memorable night in the Refuge de la Croix du Bonhomme.
!PIZZA

hi @stickupmusic ! what a coincidence :)

When I saw the name on the map, I really wanted to climb up there, maybe next time !

Beautiful pictures with amazing view, though I have not left the shores of my country but i wish I can visit some of this places someday. Thanks for sharing @anttn

From where are you ? Just to imagine the kind of shores...

I hope that for you too :) you're welcome, I'm glad you appreciate it !

I'm from Nigeria, it's so great to see those beautiful pictures of yours.

Good ro know 😊 If you're happy : I'm too !

Amazing nature!!!
