Since around 2019 or early 2020, I stopped drawing faces mainly because I enjoy scratching them out and seeing the effect of it made me realize how boring showing faces in my works are. I still think that's the case haha but you know, skills can be forgotten so I tried drawing one again to see if they are still any good or not.
Obviously the title is just exaggerated and it seems like I can still can, but they aren't as good as before. It's hard af for me now since I focus so much on the body and hands in my recent works.
As usual, I start with using my own photo as a reference. This isn't for vanity btw, I just don't like using other people's photos especially not when posting it on Hive. Although they are okay as long as you don't claim that it's yours, I just want to be as original as I can.
Besides I like this photo particularly cos the lighting is easier to draw haha.
I really struggled on the proportion of the faces since I haven't done so in like 2 years. Also the skin tone too, since I always just use a black and white for the figures haha. I did a lot of changes and as you can see, it's not that close to the reference photo although I can see it is looking quite like me.
It should actually be easy for me to draw my face since I've done it a hundred times but this one I really struggle with, and I understand why.
Then I used the pencil to add those shading to have some nice effect and also to draw details. I like that it was slowly getting better already. My lips and eyes don't quite look like that but whatever, this was just a fun drawing anyway so nothing serious. :D
Here's the result once again. I spent probably 3 hours on it. I did miss this painterly effect. I do that a lot when I paint on a physical canvas.
Overall it's still not a bad result although not as good as what I expected it to be. Colors were nice anyway despite the proportion.
In my future works I probably would put faces too but I'm still obsessed with the scribbles on top of them and I enjoy them pretty much haha.
Captivating artwork as always, Hiddi. Pero mas maganda yun orig model <3
Thank you!! hahah
Hello @hiddenblade! It looks like it turned out well, don't worry about the proportions, I think everything looks pretty good, and the reference photo is also gorgeous as you already noticed very interesting shadows and color of the photo. I immediately recognized you in the picture, hehe. I just wanted to ask where is your highlight in the form of a birthmark under the eye? I think this detail perfectly emphasizes your look, it really suits you, really! 🙂
I also started drawing not so long ago and I have some difficulties with drawing hands, hehe, well, so far I have not learned and have to use references, but I think I will soon take the time to study human anatomy in order to understand it more. Thank you for sharing, although I'm used to your scribbled style in art, I really liked this self-portrait. Keep it up!
Thank you :D Yeah anything with a nice shadow reference will always be easier lol. Yeahhhhh I always forget my birthmark hahah mainly because I see it everyday that I don't even notice it's there anymore. I also thought of adding it before but didn't care that much anymore hahah it's nice you noticed it.
Nice! It only takes some practice and even basic knowledge and human anatomy will do. You don't need to master them in my opinion unless you want to go full human drawing without references. ALways depend on what you are most comfortable with :D You can do it!!
I love your styles. It's quite hard to do some things once you do other for so long. But tes, I've enjoyed every of your styles since the very first time I saw your work here, and it wasn't because of proportions♥, but because of all your concepts and ideas on bigger works, and because of what you trasmit on smaller pieces.
Much love.
I can be perfectionist but I also know I wasn't perfect with proportions. I do love developing my concepts more than the proportions tho. Than you so much Alejandra <3
You have a beautiful face
You totally should use it more often 😅
Haha thanks! To be honest I really find my bare face corny and boring (I've been doing a lot of self portraits since 12 years ago but if I do, I prefer to do it this way:
haha, we're always our own worse critic, but your face makes a perfect reference
also, now I'm looking at your profile picture, did you use your face as a template for the art too?
Yes, my works are always self portrait :D
Beautifully done dear! :)
I had missed seeing your work! <3
Aaaw, thank you! Yeah had quite a long break lol
I’ve been away for a few months as well… but I’m back on track for now…
Actually currently I’m working on drawing ! 😅
Using your own picture to draw is just a great idea. I am sure you will be drawing and smiling at your pictures at the same time on how the look is turning out 🤩
You did well and I believe your next trial will be more beautiful.
Yeah and you will also be forced to put so much effort to make it the best since it's your face, it shouldn't look ugly LOL. Thank you!

Yes, you are not good anymore with drawing faces..
Yeah right.
That piece right there is what I call a piece.
Don't be too hard with your effort. Am sure after seeing mine you will be feeling positive.
Haha I was just comparing the skills before and now - I didn't have to struggle much with faces since that was what I do all the time. It's just not good for my standards at the moment. Thanks for all the compliments!

Wow! It looks like a real dry pastel drawing! I really love this picture )
Yeah! Procreate (the app on iPad) has really good brushes that look just like the traditional ones. Also a lot of brushes outside Procreate have improved a lot too, digital art really has progressed greatly :D
