“Mama pass me that brownie”
“Son on one side you chastise us over addition of sugar in tea and on the other you eat so much sweets. Is it how you will maintain your diet” Mama laughingly said to me.
My attitude towards sugar is very strange. Being a medical student I am fully aware about harmful effects of white sugar but there is only one thing i.e tea in which I don’t like sugar. Infact i love hard tea. Excluding tea , there is nothing left in which I can stop sugar entering my body.
If someone asks me about my favourite dishes , I will name many but if I have to pick between that dish and a dessert. I will immediatey opt for dessert. And this also because sweet nature. Hehe. If you take a look on my usual routine, you will think there is no sugar in my life but in fact my life lies in sugar.Let me tell you
My meal must includes bread. After meal I want dessert must. Cookies and cakes are mandatory on tea time. Even now when I am writing this blog , I have cookies on my side table looking towards me and waiting when I will take them in.And results of all these are manifested in the form of weight on my body. But I still cannot stop from me . Being foodie, how can I resist from delicious sweets like gulab jamun, ras malai, custard, brownie, cakes ,cookies and a long list.
Controlling sugar in beverages and drinks is not a matter of concern for me. I see people drinking sugar beverages just like water and I really feel strange over them because I never craved for sugar beverages and sugar in drinks. To exact I like eating sweet products rather than drinking.
I can take in sugarless tea and coffee or replace them with brown sugar. I can totally skip beverages as I am not fond of them. Sweets and sweet products are my weakness generally.
Sugar especially white sugar is very toxic because of its harmful effects on human body but we see it being sold in high amount. It leads to diaspora of disorders. According to 2022 reports, 26% of adults in Pakistan are suffering with diabetes whose main cause is sugar. Globally its prevalence is 10% due to over reliance on white sugar.
Sugar in every form is harmful if taken excessively. Proper management in sugar diet is essential. Though glucose is primary source of energy but excessive sucrose intake will cause harmful effects more than good. Though vegetables also contain sugar but they are involved in catabolism as well. Bitter guard and ginger are very effective in countering the effects of sugar. Replacement of ehite sugar with brown sugar can also minimize its effects to much extent.

The best thing is to control sugar, I can tell you that I particularly had a long time consuming it, and now that I am an elderly adult, I suffer the consequences of excesses with circulation problems in the legs, ulcers and other things. So take care of yourself, the good thing is that you as a doctor are aware of that, so congratulations for that.
