We don't have a one cent or two cent coin anymore in Australia, they phased them out back in 1992.
Items are still priced and charged to 0.99 cents for marketing purposes but they round it up or down at the register depending on method of payment.
So, one item at 0.99 would be charged at $1.00 if paying cash and $0.99 if paying by credit card. (Rounded to the nearest five cents.)
An entire shopping cart of groceries would be rounded up or down to the nearest $0.05 also, each item is not rounded up or down.
It sounds weird, but that's how it works here.
I used to put all my 1 and 2 cent coins in a tin and take them to the bank to change into notes once full. I actually do that with all coins to be honest, I hate having coins in my pocket. When I go to other countries I tend to have a small money pouch that I put coins into for day to day use but in Australia I avoid carrying them altogether. Here, if I have coins in my pocket, after buying something, I off-load them into a little container in my vehicle then transfer them to my coin jars.
In Pakistan, If we use any online payment method, we get our 1 rupee back. So, it's just the cashier being lazy here.
@galenkp I have a lot of coins like 3000-5000 at least. I used to make coin art. For example, I can write your name someday.
I once saw a person on Fiver having gigs that he does with couple's names. I collected coins but never got any orders. Still, I continued to practice with names. Maybe one day, I will write A-Z with coins and upload a digital version so anyone can write any letter or name digitally with coins. I know it doesn't look too special but I have seen people doing this. Most importantly, it's a relaxing and medication exercise as it requires precision and patience.
Coin art huh? I don't think I've ever seen any coin art except for some trench art from World War One made using coins. I'd like to se some.
Coin art is in my old phone. Trying to revive photos. Till then you can enjoy food art. If I don't find coin art, I will create new one for you soon. :)
I like food art...it looks so good, right up until I eat it. 😀
