Having a big family has to be one of the biggest flexes I’ve come to realize. And for someone like me who comes from a big family, I can say that there are myriads of benefits while the downsides are just minute when compared to everything else that the members of the family stand to gain. It will always be a plus and if these are family members who genuinely love and care about each other, then it will always be a flex to be part of that family.
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of knowing that you’ve got some people out there who have your back no matter what happens. They simply love and accept you regardless of your flaws. That’s the beauty of family and why it’ll always be a flex.
This won’t be the first time I’m talking about my family, but I’m ready to talk about them all over again. I come from a family of seven. We used to be eight in number, but sadly, in December of 2012, we lost our first son to the cold hands of death. My eldest brother. Moving on from this loss was hard, but we were able to make it work. Now, about sixteen years down the line, we’re waxing strong and when we think about him, it doesn’t hurt so much anymore.
When it comes to my family, I’m close to basically all of them. If there is one person I’m the least close to, it would be my immediate elder brother. He’s married with kids now, but when we were young, he rarely used to be home. He was an altar boy and during that period, it was common for them to spend long hours at the church, hell they could even stay overnight at the parish house. That was how dedicated he used to be.
As a result, I never really got to spend time with him. It only got worse when he went off to school and soon began to hustle for himself. However, it was a different case with my sisters. We’ve always been together and many times, I’m usually just the only man in the house. Which basically makes me the handyman for all chores. They were also the ones to fuel my passion for cartoons like Cinderella, Snow White, Barbie, and the like. Hell, I can assure you that there are only a few Barbie movies that I’m yet to watch. I’m sure that I can sing along with many of their songs.
That’s what you get when you have two elder sisters who choose to control the remote. And if I must watch TV, then I have to watch what they’re watching. Now, as we grew older, we’ve only gotten closer. Many of us are always separated due to life happening and the rigors of hustle pulling us from all corners. But then, that doesn’t stop us from choosing to have a good time when we’re around each other.
And just like I said, it’s always a banger. When we’re all under the same roof, it’s always like a non-stop party and it’s always fun. This makes me love the idea of having a large family. But then, does this mean that I’m also going to have a large one as well? Nah… I don’t think so.
I can still remember the financial strain it put my parents through having to cater to five kids. Thankfully though, every one of us is hustle-oriented and we value our independence very much. However, for me to comfortably decide to have five kids in this economy, hah… it’s such a scary thought. Instead of having so many kids, I can simply have two or three of my own, and then make sure that I have a great relationship with all my nephews and nieces. That way, whenever we all come around, it’ll always be a party! One that will always get bigger!
So, while I love the idea of a large family, I’m not thinking in terms of the nuclear family. It’s more of the extended famiy type of thing. One where everyone will bring their little family and we’ll be transformed into one big family. It will always be awesome!
