Starting the New Year with a Digital Detox: A Journey to Clarity and focus.

A digital detox simply refers to a period where a person chooses to stay away from using electronic devices such as smartphones, laptops, and even social media platforms.

2025 is just a few weeks away, and i have been reflecting on how much time I’ve spent on my phone this year. Honestly, I can say I hardly stayed away from it willingly. Most times, the only reason I wasn’t glued to my screen was because there was no power, and my phone was dead. My phone has literally become an essential part of my daily routine—it's how I carry out transactions, check emails and messages, and even read books through PDFs. It’s my lifeline in many ways, but at the same time, it has a grip on me that I’m not entirely comfortable with.

This year has been a whirlwind. I’ve gone through a lot of stress trying to balance different aspects of my life while trying to earn some money to support myself. Looking back, I realize how much of that stress has been caused by me constantly being online. The endless notifications, the pressure to reply to messages, and the temptation to scroll through social media have all added to my mental load. So, as I think about the year ahead, I feel it might be a good idea to start afresh with a digital detox—just stepping away from my phone and social media platforms for a while.

I know it won’t be easy. I rely heavily on my phone, and there are certain things I’d definitely miss out on. There’s always that fear of missing something important—a call, an email, or a trending topic that everyone seems to be talking about. But even with these concerns, I think the benefits of taking a break supersedes the drawbacks.

For one, I’ve noticed that I sleep much better when I’m not constantly checking my phone before bed. The nights when my phone is off or out of reach, I fall asleep faster and wake up feeling more refreshed. So maybe starting the new year without my phone could give me the rest I desperately need. Who knows, I might even gain a little weight during that period—something I’ve been hoping for a while now.

Another thing is that being away from my phone could help me focus more on myself. There are so many productive things I’ve been putting off because my screen time often eats into my day. Whether it’s picking up a new hobby spending more time outdoors having fun and participating more in social activities, or just sitting in silence and reflecting, I believe stepping away from the digital world could give me the mental space to do these things. As For me, choosing to stay away from my devices is an opportunity to step into the new year with a clearer mind and a healthier approach to life.

So yes, even though I know it’ll be challenging, I’m seriously considering starting the new year with a digital detox. It might just be the reset I need to move forward with more clarity and focus. Plus, it’s not forever—it’s just a temporary break to help me reconnect with myself and the world around me. So, If you have been feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated by your devices, maybe it’s something worth considering too.

Thanks for reading.

Mmm, sitting in silence and reflecting? That definitely sounds like something we would want to hear all about later. It would be impressive to hear that you were able to do this for a digital detour. We can’t wait to hear all about it in the coming year.
