Hats out of mushroom leather

in FungiFriday5 days ago

I've got this video since last week, but I kept it for later in the browser tab and only recently had a time to actually watch it. It's not mine, so I'm declining rewards, but I have to share it. I think it fits the #FungiFriday pretty good.

The author of the video visited family of hat makers that use traditional methods of processing certain type of pretty common mushrooms into "leather" and then into hats. It shows the whole process, from choosing the right mushrooms, what can you do with it if it turns out not suitable, how to prepare tools, cutting and separating proper part of the mushroom, finally shaping it and adding embossed ornaments.

Enjoy :o)

Bonus: zombie fungus on a tarantula

Since the video leaves some questions unanswered, I've tried to look for the information elsewhere:

  • it does not have strong smell, rather similar in intensity to other natural materials, like regular leather
  • it is not waterproof, in fact the same material is often used as a sponge to dry other things; however it can be treated to make it resilient to rain/humid conditions
  • it is pretty durable when properly maintained, much more than what you'd expect from a mushroom material, although not as much as regular leather

Even though it is not as good as ordinary leather, it is a truly extraordinary work of art.
Honestly, I've never seen this before, and it's very creative, using mushrooms to make a hat.
Thank you very much for sharing this video, it really motivates me,Every object definitely has a function and benefits if we know how to manage it. That's awesome, have a great day ♥️

Very cool! I think I have seen something similar a while ago. I just cant remember what they were making from the mushroom.

But that tarantula!! Wow! :D :D

I've got the video from wykop, lurker or hejto - one of those three. If you are reading them, you could've seen it already :o)
