Hello gaming community, since a few months ago l have not been able to dedicate my free time to play games as I would like to because I’ve been kind of busy (adult life guys), anyway a couple of days ago I was talking with a friend about how things have changed in gaming for good and for worse since we were kids, so I thought it could be an interesting topic to share with you. I’ll talk about the things that I miss the most from those gaming years, I’m pretty sure many of you could find this relatable.
Amusement arcades | Salones arcade
Visiting amusement arcades during my childhood was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life, especially because thanks to it I was able to get to know about franchises like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, The House of the Dead and Time Crisis. The truth is that I remember going to these places every weekend with my friends and family and being always excited to see all the people there, it was almost like a videogame fair where everyone went to have fun and where you could make new friends.
I also had a lot of luck because my father worked in one of these amusement arcades and usually let me and my brother play games like X-Men vs Street Fighter or Tekken Tag Tournament for free, ah, such a fond memories. It’s a shame that these places where I use to have so much fun when I was a kid have disappeared almost entirely, because I think they were great and interesting places to socialize with other gamers without needing an internet connection or social media.
Maybe a lot of people won’t think like they were that great, but to me, physical videogame manuals that came included with the games had a special charm, I remember when I had the first PlayStation and how I use to read all the information that was written in these little books about the characters, the story or the gameplay, and also admiring with fascination the designs of all the illustrations on them, I confess that I’m disappointed with how this kind of materials barely exist now.
Ready to play | Listo para jugar
It’s true that now games with bugs can be fixed with patches, but I miss the times when companies put enough effort to launch their titles completely functional on the first day, without having to install the games using the physical copies or download any updates. Before, you only needed a disc or cartridge and once you were at home, you only had to put it in the console and you were ready to start playing, this is something I personally appreciate a lot, especially when I have less free time to play.
Full games | Juegos completos
One of the things I dislike the most about the modern era of gaming is the amount of greed that most game developers have when they sell their games in slices to squeeze more money from the users. Before, all the content of the games, including extras, could be unlocked simply by playing, overcoming challenges and putting in some effort, not by spending more money, the worse thing is that all these business practices are becoming normal now, with several younger gamers getting use to them instead of fighting back, but preferring to spend a lot of money for microtransactions, loot boxes or dlc.
For this reason I miss the times when you could unlock secret characters in a fighting game, extra modes, costumes or any other type of content with your own merit and not with your wallet.
Local multiplayer | Multijugador local
There’s no doubt that online gaming is very important now, but personally, I think there’s more fun in what the local multiplayer can offer, just for the fact of sharing with people who are in the same room as you, is because of this reason that now, seeing how as time passes there are less games with this option, that things are looking depressing, specially because I haven’t being able to enjoy several modern games with my friends and family, playing in the same console, I think a lot of companies shouldn’t condition their users to exclusively having to play online to be able to enjoy the company of other people.
Rivalries without toxicity | Rivalidades sin toxicidad
Several gaming generations ago, when the internet was more limited, you couldn’t see these types of disputes filled with hate and insults because of the companies or franchises that each gamer preferred, don’t be mistaken, rivalries existed but they were healthier and didn’t come with deathly hate, you’ll see, I was always a fan of PlayStation and had friends who had a Nintendo 64, a Dreamcast or the first Xbox, but we never hated each other for liking different consoles or games genre, in reality, we were curious about the games and functions that the other systems had to offer.
The truth is that I miss that environment greatly, I think a lot of the hate now and not only when it comes to gaming, has a lot to do with how social media is used and how radical some virtual communities can become.
Well guys, that was it, I’m curious to know what are your thoughts about this topic, thank you very much for reading and I hope to see you in a next post.
Thank you for reading, see you around!
Gracias por visitar mi post, ¡Nos estamos leyendo!
I've only ran into two or three acrades in my life that were not inside of movie thearters. The days of going to the arcade to game were before my time, but I also loved playing on the different arcade machines that were at the bowling ally, or the movie theater!
Man you make feel old hahahah (just kidding dude), I played on many Arcades but during its final years of popularity, thanks to that I knew about several wonderful games. Thanks for stopping by.
We need a damn time machine!
Yeah man, old gaming times were so great, we need to call Emmett Brown to go back in time hahaha.
It's true that the gaming world has evolved for the better, but there are some downsides. We can no longer do things we could always do. For example, being able to play a game with friends in the same environment. Yeah, the LAN feature is not in a lot of games anymore and I agree with you on that. That was really fun.
Changes come with some sacrifices, playing games with some friends in the same place was really unic, I know they're still a few games that have lan features but I wish all of them keep that option. Thanks for stopping by dude!
Arcades were great. It was always fun to play with friends or a date. Plus, arcade games were usually pretty simple so even people who weren’t gamers could learn to play pretty quickly. I feel the same way about how some studios release unfinished games or try to scam customers into buying a complete product for additional fees. And local multiplayer is always great, playing with your friends and family beside you in the same room. Online play is great for other reasons but playing with strangers isn’t a guaranteed good experience. Luckily there are still quite a few games that come out as promised on release date but it’s a decreasing number, forcing people apart who like to play together. Maybe it’s the economy or the damn business logic of it — forcing people to buy more consoles, rather than controllers. But breaking up full games into half games and DLC’s is pretty messed up. Wonder how gaming will change in another ten years, hopefully for the better. Good post. I haven’t thought of Nintendo 64 in decades, but now I remember loving playing Starfox local multiplayer with friends.
Yeah, the arcades were wonderful places because not only gamer had fun. On the other hand I don't get why most companies are forcing online modes only, the best for everyone would be that all multiplayer games feature both local and online modes. I hope the future of gaming change for the better too. Thanks for your opinión dude!
A veces extraño esos tiempos.
Saludos.
