Hoy les quiero hablar de un juego que me sorprendió recientemente, Snoot Game, una novela visual paródica que nos muestra un mundo alterno donde humanos y dinosaurios conviven… si ya sé que suena a cochinadas de furros pero no me molestaría en hablar de él si fuera eso.

Today I want to talk about a game that surprised me recently, Snoot Game, a parodic visual novel that shows us an alternate world where humans and dinosaurs coexist... I know it sounds like Furry crap but I wouldn't bother talking about it if it were that.

Quisiera ir al grano pero su sola existencia requiere un poco de contexto:
En 2020 se hizo un evento llamado “El futuro del Gaming” donde Sony revelo la Play Station 5, dicho evento tenía la finalidad de mostrar las capacidades de la consola, y tras presentar juegos titánicos como el ultimo God of War, de repente nos dan un anuncio completamente fuera de lugar. El tráiler de un juego del estudio KO_OP llamado Goodbye Volcano High, una aventura narrativa y musical que muestra Fang, une pterodáctilo líder de una banda de Rock que asiste a una secundaria de dinosaurios antropomórficos de tonos saturados. El hecho de que dicho tráiler no mostro nada de gameplay y en cambio solo tuvimos a furries (o mejor dicho scalies) de colores pastel actuando dramáticamente, una banda que por alguna razón usaban 2 bajos, y una fogata en la que arrojando un anuario al fuego creo confusión y burla por parte de quienes los presenciaron. Lo próximo que sabríamos tampoco ayudo, ya que uno de los involucrados priorizo revelar los pronombres de Fang (They/Them) y su intento de sintetizar los temas del juego fue “descubrimiento personal, el amor, y la realidad LGBT”. Y el historial laboral en páginas de noticias de esa misma persona no ayudaría.

I'd like to get to the point but its very existence requires a bit of context:
In 2020 there was an event called "The Future of Gaming" where Sony unveiled the Play Station 5, this event was intended to show the capabilities of the console, and after presenting titanic games like the latest God of War, suddenly we get an announcement completely out of place. The trailer for a game from studio KO_OP called Goodbye Volcano High, a musical narrative adventure featuring Fang, a pterodactyl rock band leader who attends a high school of anthropomorphic dinosaurs with saturated tones. The fact that the trailer didn't show any gameplay and instead just had pastel-colored furries (or rather scalies) acting dramatically, a band that for some reason used 2 basses, and a bonfire in which throwing a yearbook into the fire created confusion and mockery on the part of those who witnessed it. The next thing we knew didn't help either, as one of the people involved prioritized revealing Fang's pronouns (They/Them) and his attempt to synthesize the themes of the game was "self-discovery, love, and LGBT reality". And the employment history on news sites of that same person would not help.

Esto daría todo tipo de burlas en internet, principalmente en 4chan: Ya sea bromas LGBTfobicas, desprecio a los furries o a Tumblr, criticas al diseño de personajes sobresaliendo el asco que provocaba el hocico de Fang, o porque simplemente no estaba a la talla de una presentación que tenía que mostrar las capacidades graficas de la nueva consola. Pero las cosas cambiarían cuando la gente de repente empezó a dar ideas de rediseños, teorías, versiones alternas, etc… crearían un grupo de fans no irónicos de Fang, así estos anónimos empezarían a imaginarse a ellos mismos en una relación con elle y logrando “arreglarle”.

This would give rise to all kinds of mockery on the internet, mainly in 4chan: Whether it was LGBTphobic jokes, contempt for furries or Tumblr, criticisms of the character design highlighting the disgust that Fang's snout provoked, or because it simply wasn't up to par for a presentation that was supposed to show off the graphical capabilities of the new console. But things changed when people suddenly started giving ideas of redesigns, theories, alternate versions, etc... they would create a group of non-ironic Fang fans, so these anonymous people would begin to imagine themselves in a relationship with the ptero and managing to "fix" them.

Gracias a que la página oficial de Goodbye Volcano High tenía fichas de personaje para que podamos conocer un poco a los personajes que lo van a protagonizar, un grupo de anónimos de 4chan pensaron en la divertida idea de usar esta información y crear un juego parodia que logre ser lanzado antes que el original. Así de parte del estudio Cavemanon tendríamos a Snoot Game. Un juego disponible gratuitamente para cualquier bagatela con una pantalla y que ya desde su trailer inspiraba puras cosas buenas, independientemente de que las ilustraciones fueron prácticamente garabateadas teníamos una canción pegadiza, una clara idea de que se iba a tratar, y lo mejor de todo: Fang tenia una guitarra.

Thanks to the fact that the official page of Goodbye Volcano High had character cards so that we could know a little bit about the characters that will star in it, a group of anonymous people from 4chan thought of the funny idea of using this information and create a parody game that manages to be released before the original one. Thus, from the Cavemanon studio we would have Snoot Game. A game available for free for any trifle with a screen and that already from its trailer inspired pure good things, regardless that the illustrations were practically doodled we had a catchy song, a clear idea of what it was going to be about, and best of all: Fang had a guitar.

Historia / Plot

La historia trata de… bueno, vean la descripción de la página oficial:

“Juegas como Anon, un solitario don nadie rechazado sin rostro que es transferido a Volcano High, un viaje de ácido con temática de dinosaurios que se hace llamar escuela. Aquí Anon se encuentra con la ptero conocida como Fang y su pandilla de amigos rechazados de color vómito de payaso y otras molestias asociadas.”

The story is about... well, check out the description on the official site:

"You play as Anon, a lonely, faceless, nobody, reject who finds himself in the dinosaur themed acid trip of a school named Volcano High. Here Anon meets the qt ptero known as Fang and their clown-vomit colored posse of reject friends and other associated thorns-in-the-side."

Sip, ya saben de qué va la cosa: LGBTfobia, r*cismo, críticas a la apariencia de sus compañeros y por ende a los diseños del juego original, referencias a memes, entre otras cosas. Como salió de 4chan y mi protagonista sin cara literalmente se llama "Anon Y. Mous" no me esperaba más que echarme unas risas con la muy probable auto-inserción del autor que resultaría ser un basado que la trama siempre le dará la razón y al final convertirá a Fang en cis además de en su novia.

Yep, you know what it's all about: LGBTphobia, r*cism, criticism of the appearance of your fellow players and thus the original game's designs, meme references, among other things. Since it came out of 4chan and my faceless protagonist is literally named "Anon Y. Mous" I expected nothing more than to have a few laughs with the very likely self-insertion of the author who would turn out to be a based that the plot will always prove him right and in the end turn Fang into cis and besides his girlfriend.

Pero la verdad es que el juego trata a Anon por lo que es, un perdedor antipático que se mete en situaciones que le darán la oportunidad de reflexionar y al jugador de ayudarlo a que sea empático con quienes le rodean, así descubriría que Fang es más que une problemátique, que tiene talento, que tienen el mismo sentido del humor, y que puede ser agradable una vez se gana su confianza, así mismo Fang inesperadamente sentiría envidia de Anon porque a pesar de ser un otaku sin talento, este estaba seguro de quien era, al aceptarse como era le facilitaba no solo el integrarse sino que mejorar se le daría de manera natural si se lo proponía, así Fang aprendería que descubrir quién es puede ser algo que debe descubrir por su cuenta pero que el camino para llegar a ello no tiene que transitarlo sole.

But the truth is that the game treats Anon for what he is, a unpleasant loser who gets into situations that will give him the opportunity to reflect and the player to help him to be empathetic with those around him, so he would discover that Fang is more than a troublemaker, that they are talented, that they have the same sense of humor, and that they can be nice once they gain their trust, Likewise Fang would unexpectedly feel envious of Anon because despite being an otaku without talent he was sure of who he was, by accepting himself as he was, it made it easier for him not only to integrate, but to improve would come naturally if he put his mind to it, so Fang would learn that discovering who they are is something they must discover on their own but that the road to get there does not have to travel it alone.

Mi condición de critico me ha hecho alguien difícil de impresionar, pero aun así sin darme cuenta me vi inmerso en la historia de cómo Anon y Fang comenzaban a llevarse bien hasta el punto de llegar a gustarse. La parodia que me hizo doler las costillas hace unas horas de repente empezó a hablar de crisis de identidad, traumas de la infancia, manipulación, empatía, apoyo, y quizá la lección más importante: Conseguir pareja no es como en tus comedias románticas, menos si tu pajera es una pterodáctilo emocionalmente inestable.

My condition as a critic has made me hard to impress, but even so, without realizing it, I found myself immersed in the story of how Anon and Fang began to get along to the point of liking each other. The parody that made my ribs ache a few hours ago suddenly started talking about identity crises, childhood trauma, manipulation, empathy, support, and perhaps the most important lesson: Getting a partner isn't like in your romantic comedies, let alone if your straw is an emotionally unstable pterodactyl.

Ciertamente ambos son completamente diferentes pero igual de rotos al no saber o no querer mejorar, dándoles una mala reputación, por lo que juntarlos parece un inevitable camino a la miseria, pero si los ayudas a salir adelante darán a relucir fortalezas que por casualidades de la vida son justo las fortalezas que el otro necesita, pasando de ser una relación dañina a una perfectamente complementaria. Aclaro, los finales buenos no se obtienen faltándole el respeto a la autopercepción de Fang o tratando de “arreglarla”, todo lo contrario, esto activa uno de los finales malos, solo respetándola y apoyándola es que irónicamente podría lograr descubrir si ese tipo de cosas mejoran o empeoran su condición.

Certainly both are completely different but equally broken by not knowing or not wanting to improve, giving them a bad reputation, so bringing them together seems like an inevitable road to misery, but if you help them to get ahead they will bring out strengths that by chance of life are just the strengths that the other needs, going from being a harmful relationship to a perfectly complementary one. Let me clarify, the good endings are not obtained by disrespecting Fang's self-perception or trying to "fix" her, quite the contrary, this triggers one of the bad endings, only by respecting her and supporting her could she ironically manage to find out if that kind of thing makes her condition better or worse.

Personajes / Characters

• Lucy "Fang" Aaron: Le co-protagoniste, malhumorade y agresive pero que bajo todo ello se esconde alguien que intenta encontrar su lugar en el mundo. Lo único que Fang sabe es su pasión por la música. Al principio me estaba retorciendo cada que un “elle” aparecía en la caja de texto (tampoco me fue mejor escribiendo esto), pero con forme más conocemos a Fang terminamos aprendiendo la gravedad de sus problemas, que su crisis de identidad cubre más que solo su género, era sobre su talento, su familia, su futuro, y en gran medida su pasado. Los problemas de Fang valen tanto como los de cualquier otra persona y lo único que le hacia falta era alguien que le entienda, cosa que ni la gente que respetaba sus pronombres hacia.

Lucy "Fang" Aaron: The co-star, moody and aggressive but underneath it all is someone who is trying to find their place in the world. All Fang knows is their passion for music. At first I was squirming and confused over the pronoun thing (I didn't do any better writing this either), but as we get to know Fang we end up learning the gravity of her issues, that her identity crisis covers more than just her gender, it was about her talent, her family, her future, and to a large extent her past. Fang's problems are as valid as anyone else's and all they needed was someone to understand them, something that even people who respected their pronouns didn't do.

• Naser Aaron: El hermano menor de Fang y un estudiante de honor. Es un chico con buenas intenciones que siempre se preocupa por su pariente. Por desgracia es propenso a equivocarse en lo que dice o hace para ayudar. Es la primera persona en ofrecerle su amistad a Anon y uno de los primeros acercamientos de este a preocuparse por los demás. Trata de ser el chico perfecto ya que el solo carga con todas las expectativas y esperanzas que los demás ya han perdido en Fang, gastándolo mentalmente.

Naser Aaron: Fang's younger brother and an honor student. He is a well-meaning boy who always cares about his relative. Unfortunately he is prone to making mistakes in what he says or does to help. He is the first person to offer his friendship to Anon and one of Anon's first approaches to caring about others. He tries to be the perfect guy as he single-handedly carries all the expectations and hopes that others have already lost in Fang, mentally wearing him down.

• Naomi: Novia de Naser y el comité de bienvenida de Anon, una muy indeseable para él. De actitud alegre y positiva, tiene la mala costumbre de parlotear y tomar decisiones por otros. Se mete a la fuerza en la vida de Anon con intenciones cuanto menos sospechosas.

Naomi: Naser's girlfriend and Anon's welcoming committee, a very undesirable one for him. With a cheerful and positive attitude, has a bad habit of chattering and making decisions for others. She forces her way into Anon's life with suspicious intentions to say the least.

• Spears: El director de Volcano High, desarrolla un particular interés en Anon debido a su reciente llegada y las expectativas que este le genera (o simplemente porque es de los pocos humanos en el instituto). Es dueño de la frase que resonará dentro de Anon por gran parte del juego: "No eres la única persona en el mundo". Se volverá un guía importante tanto para Anon como para el jugador, y en general es todo lo que un hombre anhela ser... Y si, es una referencia a Primal.

Spears: The director of Volcano High, develops a particular interest in Anon due to his recent arrival and the expectations that this generates (or simply because he is one of the few humans in the institute). He owns the phrase that will resonate within Anon for much of the game, "You are not the only person in the world". He will become an important guide for both Anon and the player, and in general is everything a man long to be... And yes, it's a reference to Primal.

• Reed: Reed es el batería, letrista y técnico de VVURM DRAMA. Siempre consumiendo sustancias de dudosa legalidad, constantemente nos pondrá en duda de que tan lucido esta, ya que sus idas por la tangente están a la par con su habilidad de leer a la gente y de arreglar cosas.

Reed is the drummer, lyricist and technician for VVURM DRAMA. Always consuming substances of dubious legality, he will constantly question how cool he is, as his tangents are on par with his ability to read people and fix things.

• Trish: La pequeña mejor amiga de Fang y bajista de VVURM DRAMA que empuja constantemente a la banda a probar cosas que se supone los haría reconocibles. Es el principal obstáculo entre Anon y Fang debido a la nula confianza que esta le tiene al humano...Solo por ella baje un punto al apartado de personajes y ojala se caiga de hocico por una escalera, sip, eso es todo lo que tengo que opinar de ella.

Trish: Fang's little best friend and VVURM DRAMA bassist who constantly pushes the band to try things that were supposed to make them recognizable. She is the main obstacle between Anon and Fang due to the lack of trust she has for the human... Only because of her i lowered the character section by one point and i hope she falls down a staircase on her snoot, yep, that's all I have to say about her.

• Rosa: La alta y fuerte (No me miren raro, solo dije verdades) Jefa del club de jardinería y estereotipo mexicano definitivo. Una creyente devota que si se le da la oportunidad estará mas que encantada en ayudar y escuchar a quien lo necesite.

Rosa: The tall and strong (don't look at me funny, I just told the truth) Head of the garden club and the ultimate Mexican stereotype. A devout believer who if given the opportunity will be more than happy to help and listen to anyone in need.

Stella: Adivina del Tarot socialmente rara que intenta actuar de misteriosa, pero al final su naturaleza alegre y actitudes propias de un otaku la traicionan, si se entera que alguien más ve anime este no podrá escapar de sus recomendaciones.

Stella: Socially awkward fortune teller who tries to act mysterious, but in the end her cheerful nature and otaku attitudes betray her, if she finds out that someone else watches anime they won't be able to escape her recommendations.

Mecánicas / Mechanics

Es una novela visual, obvio no hay gameplay que mencionar, sin embargo el sistema de elecciones es interesante ya que la toma de decisiones se dividen en 3: Las cruciales para sacar los finales buenos o malos, las de destino sellado pero que el juego quería saber tu opinión de todos modos, y las de broma como “pulsa esta opción o tu mama se mu*re”. De los cruciales muchos son de sentido común, pero otros son un poco tramposos y una prueba de que no siempre lo que parece correcto es realmente lo correcto. Si los furros que están leyendo esto esperaban múltiples rutas con diferentes chicas pues que mal porque aquí aprenderán el significado de alma gemela y de la ley de gravedad.

It is a visual novel, obviously there is no gameplay to mention, however the choice system is interesting as the decision making is divided into 3: The crucial ones to get the good or bad endings, the sealed fate ones but that the game wanted to know your opinion anyway, and the joke ones like "press this option or your mom d*es". The crucial ones many are common sense, but others are a bit of a cheat and proof that not always what seems right is actually the right thing to do. If the furries reading this were expecting multiple routes with different girls then too bad because here they will learn the meaning of soul mate and the law of gravity.

El juego cuenta con 4 finales, de peor a mejor, para llegar al cuarto uno esperaría que hubiera alguna mecánica de medidor de confianza y que las decisiones se traten solo de cómo hay que tratar a Fang, pero luego me enteraría que los puntos que uno acumula para obtener los finales no solo son de Fang, sino de Anon, así que tienes que velar por ambos para poder conseguir el final feliz. Conseguir los capítulos extra sin embargo será una agonía debido a que para desbloquearlos incluyendo el epílogo es necesario de sacar todos los finales, tanto para que veas de lo que te perdiste por idiota o para que veas las balas que lograste esquivar.

The game has 4 endings, from worst to best, to get to the fourth one you would expect there to be some trust meter mechanic and that the decisions are just about how you have to treat Fang, but then I would find out that the points you accumulate to get the endings are not just Fang's, but Anon's, so you have to watch out for both of them in order to get the happy ending. Getting the extra chapters however will be an agony because to unlock them including the epilogue you need to get all the endings, either to see what you missed because you were an idiot or to see the bullets you managed to dodge.

Apartado visual y sonoro / Visual and Sound Section

Aquí es donde el juego flaquea ya que ni el arte ni la música son realmente originales.

This is where the game falters as neither the art nor the music is truly original.

El arte es algo sucio y los diseños pues obviamente son los diseños de GVH pero en algunos casos el estilo ayuda a verse mejor a algunos personajes como Fang o Stella, y todo personaje que requiera la trama pero que no saliera en el tráiler de GVH es una referencia a alguna serie con suficiente material de memes. En ocasiones nos dan ilustraciones representado escenas que la verdad lucen bastante bien. Las animaciones están entre lo estándar en este tipo de novelas programadas en Ren’Py, la mayoría del tiempo solo son renders siendo trasladados de aquí para allá en un fondo hecho con una foto pasada por filtro artístico del Photoshop. Destacando solo por un inesperado zoom de cámara o esa extraña necesidad del programador de hacer caer al protagonista o tirarle cosas a la frente.

The art is somewhat dirty and the designs are references to characters from series and others are obviously GVH designs but in some cases the style helps to look better to some characters like Fang or Stella, sometimes we are given illustrations depicting scenes that actually look pretty good. The animations are among the standard in this type of novels programmed in Ren'Py, most of the time they are just renders being moved from here to there on a background made with a photo passed through the artistic filter of Photoshop. The only highlights are an unexpected camera zoom or that strange need of the programmer to make the protagonist fall down or throw things to his forehead.

La música usa recursos gratuitos, interpolaciones sin derechos de autor, y alguna referencia a AC/DC por ahí, con todo y eso me gusta el ambiente que trae, como de secundaria de los años 2000 donde todos escuchaban Blink 182 o Sum 41. La ambiental y la de otros géneros no se quedan atrás, habiendo melodías que por sí solas son buenas y que una vez las asocias con los contextos en los que se usan pueden ponerte emocional. Y claro alguna graciosada tenían que meter aquí también así que algunos títulos van desde decir explícitamente para que se usan y otros títulos son como “We just turned on the microphone in our programmers house”.

The music uses free resources, interpolations without copyrights, and some references to AC/DC, but I like the atmosphere it brings, like in high school in the 2000's where everyone listened to Blink 182 or Sum 41. The ambient and other genres are not left behind, having melodies that by themselves are good and that once you associate them with the contexts in which they are used can make you emotional. And of course they had to include some funny stuff here too, so some titles go from explicitly saying what they are used for and other titles are like "We just turned on the microphone in our programmers house".

En conclusión / In conclusion

Tras unos cuantos retrasos Goodbye Volcano High lograría salir en 2023, si bien no fue la basura que todo mundo esperaba (¿La salida de Kate Gray del proyecto y la reescritura que casualmente hicieron luego de la salida de Snoot Game tendría algo que ver?) la experiencia la podría resumir en potencial desperdiciado y ganas de irme a dormir. Curioso como un proyecto que con o sin polémicas hubiera pasado bajo el radar seria adoptado su concepto por el sitio web más turbio y políticamente incorrecto existente, y entre las risas terminan por relucir el potencial que tenían entre manos, increíblemente con ellos ya van 2 estudios salidos de sitio que crearon novelas visuales bien escritas y que van más allá de fantasear con tener novia.

After a few delays Goodbye Volcano High managed to come out in 2023, although it was not the garbage that everyone expected (Kate Gray's departure from the project and the rewrite that coincidentally they did after the publication of Snoot Game would have something to do with it?) the experience could be summarized as wasted potential and the desire to go to sleep. Curious how a project that with or without controversy would have passed under the radar would be adopted by the most turbid and politically incorrect website in existence, and between the laughter they end up showing the potential they had in their hands, incredibly with them there are already 2 studios out of site that created well-written visual novels that go beyond fantasizing about having a girlfriend.

Hacerle bullying a KO_OP con un juego hecho con odio lo podía haber hecho cualquiera, pero en vez de odiar GVH prefirieron reinterpretarlo para crear su propia historia. Lo cual resulto en una humillación peor ya que Snoot Game con los mismos personajes de GVH se ganó el cariño que el juego original ya quisiera haber recibido siquiera la mitad, ya que la otra mitad de ese cariño provendría de gente que se enteraría por medio de Snoot Game que GVH existe. Así pues, lo que era algo que se suponía solo atraería pibes basados e intolerantes termino en el compartir de experiencias y emociones que Snoot Game les transmitió, Anon paso de ser ese tipo con el que todos los fracasados se podrían identificar a ser un ejemplo a seguir en los mejores finales.

Anomalías como esta solo son posibles con la magia del Internet. Tantas risas, lagrimas y reflexiones encapsulados en una parodia sobre el romance entre un adicto al shitpost y un pterodáctilo gótico.

Bullying KO_OP with a game made with hate could have been done by anyone, but instead of hating GVH they preferred to reinterpret it to create their own story. Which resulted in a worse humiliation since Snoot Game with the same GVH characters won the love that the original game would have liked to have received even half, since the other half of that affection would come from people who would find out through Snoot Game that GVH exists. So, what was supposed to be something that was only appeal to the bigoted and based kids ended up in the sharing of experiences and emotions that Snoot Game conveyed to them, Anon went from being that guy that all losers could identify with to being an example to follow in the best endings.

Anomalies like this are only possible with the magic of the Internet. So many laughs, tears and reflections encapsulated in a parody about the romance between a shitpost addict and a gothic pterodactyl.
