Let's Play Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate - the "G" in G Rank stands for "Oh God no"

in Hive Gaming4 years ago

It can also stand for "oh jesus, oh god" and the always common "git gud".

Why? because the very good looking monster standing right over there who is definitely a prime example of its species can just kill me by breathing too hard on my neck and I'm most definitely not sweet talking him so that he doesn't murder me.

Oh sweet lord he's coming over here.

G Rank is hard. Maybe harder because I'm doing this alone, but hard nonetheless.

This is the point in the game where you start munchkining, as in min-maxing everything so that monsters standing right over there don't kill you just by farting on you, which happens more often than you imagine in the case of Congalala.

I know I exaggerate stuff all the time but this time I'm being serious. No matter where you find yourself, either in the latter part of G rank or the earlier, the monsters will mess you up if you get hit a few times.

You have to learn, learn how to dodge, when to dodge, when not to dodge and, most importantly, learn about the stupid monster attacks that hit you even when they should not.

This because most monster attacks can take a good chunk of your health and those that don't can just kill you.

So yeah, this is where it gets real.

It starts surprisingly easy; just fight some variants like you did back in High Rank, some of them being easy and others not so much.

In one hand you have stuff like Ash Kecha Wacha who is just a recolor of Kecha Wacha that throws fire boogers at you instead of water boogers and on the other hand you have stuff like Tidal Najarala who, trough the use of 5G, connects to Elon Musk's own satellites to perform several thousand mathematical equations to pin-point your exact position in order for his water projectiles to hone in and hit you.

No matter where you are, or where you live T. Najarala will find you and he will hit you with his stupid water rockets that bounce of his scales.

T.Najarala throws scales from its tail which redirect its water blasts, the water blasts hit the scales and then change their direction to hit hunters.

But seriously, the monsters in G rank are more of a challenge not only because of the damage they make but because some of their moves change.

For example, Zamtrios is an ice shark that can become fat at will. In low/high rank he has this move where he charges towards a hunter and he has some "wind up" before it, in G Rank? he just takes 1 second to open its mouth and then charges. If he's winding up he's going to do a 360 spin with an ice laser that can take a lot of health.

WPPzamtriosfunnyhaha.png
This isn't a G Rank Zamtrios but I put him here because he looks funny like that.

Aside from all of this, G Rank is pretty much the same as the ranks before with some added difficulty. It's just the endgame really, this is where you have to learn how to mix armor sets properly (or google some good mixed sets yourself like everyone does) and stay back for a few seconds and understand how the monster moves before hitting 'em on the head.

Just like the other ranks multiplayer trivializes G Rank's difficulty, although later on everyone has to make sure they have good gear or they'll just die to Rajang's muscle spasms.

Now, I myself haven't gotten that far in G Rank because I am very tired and because I am actually scared of the big mean monsters.

Oh and the grinding, yes that scares me too.

Other unique things that G Rank includes are Apex Monsters which are monsters that incredibly stronger than normal and that can be seen just as you start G Rank.

Apex Rajang is something that a lot of people have witnessed and been shocked by, seeing as he can pretty much show up in almost every single quest as an intruder.

There's also Cephadrome, which is unique to G Rank because the devs are masochists and want you to suffer. You need to kill two to progress through G1 (the first G Rank quests) and I'm never fighting one of them ever again.

I hate this fish, that's all. If I were to say more about him I wouldn't be able to stop.

Then there's also the variants, which I've mentioned before, and they're all unique to G Rank; you won't find a Tidal Najarala on High Rank (thank god)

Another thing that comes with G rank is different sets of armor, just like with High Rank, you get stronger armors when you fight the same monsters in this rank and some of them have different looks from their High/Low counterparts, like Gore or Zinogre Armor for example.

...Yes that means you have to grind the same monster again.

The only exception to this would be Great Jaggi Armor, which doesn't exist for some reason in G Rank, which is blasphemy, as Great Jaggi is the truly the strongest monster to ever exist in the series and him not being on G Rank is bull.

In my case, and because I am a person who enjoys suffering, I ended up making Barioth Armor, which is a monster that doesn't exist in this game, but you can exchange some regular Najarala parts for Barioth ones.

WPPelchupacabra.png
A Najarala is like a T. Najarala except that it uses sound instead of water.

Fighting Najarala so much makes me ask myself if I enjoy being in pain. Seriously I hate this snake.

Normally, one would wait until getting to G2 to make a Regios armor, which is basically G Rank meta (at least until you get something better) but I laugh at this game's meta and instead do whatever I want, because that mean's I'll suffer more I'm playing like I want to.

WPPfuckthemeta.png
With the powers of this armor I'll cheese through your instakill moves!

One really wonders why I suffer so much through this game.

Remember last time? When I was talking about getting into G Rank and upgrading my weapons to be ready for it? It's a necessity my friends.

The variants themselves have thicker skins than the normal monsters, and given that you'll end up fighting them right at the beginning it's important to have something that can cut through their impenetrable flesh.

More importantly, it's important to upgrade your stuff, otherwise it won't cut through or deal significant damage.

It should be easy to upgrade things because it's eventually becomes a cycle of sorts; you need A to kill X faster but you need Y materials to make A stronger, so you go grind Z to make B stronger to kill Y and get enough stuff to upgrade A and make C with X materials.

WPPkechaguasha.png
Give me one of whatever-the-hell that thing is. I need it to kill things faster.

It gets harder as you fight more monsters and experiment with more weapons (read: need very rare drops) but you eventually get used to it.

WPPSilverratto.png
Remember this guy? I still need more of his flesh for something.

...That's pretty much it. There's not much else for G Rank, I mean, there's more but I haven't gotten there yet.

Will I manage to finish G Rank? Probably. Will I do that next week? Jesus no, I need a break; rushing G Rank isn't fun.

I'll probably go play something relaxing, like the sims, or maybe Monster Hunter Generations...

I still enjoy this game mind you, I just need a little rest from...

WPPtigrexono.png

...yeah, that.

Come join me next time, when I figure something else to talk about because I've sunk so much time onto this game that I really can't talk about anything else.
