Even Stevens for Ruleset, Even Stevens in terms of Thorns for Tanks.

Hi Battle Mages, before I talk about my Battle for Today, can we take a moment to talk about the new battle front look?! I love it! I haven’t been able to play this week, and when I hopped in to play my battle today, I was absolutely amazed by the new look we’re seeing in the battle display page. Gorgeous! I like how the orientation of almost everything that’s not a monster or summoner has been moved to the top of the battlescreen. Makes the battle ground cleaner and better looking. The designs of the controls have also seen an upgrade which I love as well.

Now into the business for today…

I am choosing to share this particular battle with you because of the uncertainty I had going into this battle, and the surprises my opponent gave me with the cards they brought to battle. Except for Cursed Windeku, almost all of their cards were strange to me.

Even Stevens is one of those rulesets that limits your ability to use your favorite monsters significantly. It leaves many summoners with only very few monsters to summon, and even those monsters will more than likely be mid. If you know my splinterlands game play history, you'll know that everytime I use a ranged monster, it's out of necessity. So you get the impression when I use not one, but two ranged monsters. Anyways, let's breakdown my strategy for this battle.

A lot of my favorite monsters fall within either the fire or earth elements, so I selected Brewmaster Abraxas to have flexibility to be able to summon monsters from both. I only use Brewmaster Abraxas, because everytime I use him, I'm sacrificing a summoner buff that could be instrumental in battle.

For my tank I selected Venari Knifer. I don't even remember the last time I used any Venari at all. I noticed that my opponent liked using melee monsters sometimes, putting thorny monster as tank. So I figured I'd give him a taste of his medicine in case he decided to try to pull that move on me, and as you see their line up, they did indeed taste the bitterness they serve. So if we were both called Steven, I guess we really would've been Even Stevens. 😂

In second position, I had Immolation. Powerful fiery monster with mute ability in case my opponent came to battle with melee monsters.

Behind Immolation, Goblin Psychic stood with his magic attacks to defend the team, and healing potions to protect my tank. Because of his and my other monsters' low health, I was praying my opponent wouldn't come to battle with an opportunist, and lucky for me, they actually didn't.

Scavo FireboltSupply Runner

For Scavo Firebolt and Supply Runner, I just selected them because I was running out of monsters to pick, and a 2-ranged attack doesn't look too bad when you're desperate to fill your line up.

All the way at the back, I put Antoid Platoon, so that in case my opponent had any smart ideas to try to sneak up on me, it'd take for him to start doing any real damage to my line up.

Comments on the battle

I'm not going to lie, in round 2, my opponent's Twilight Basilisk gave me a real scare when 3 of my most powerful monsters missed their attack on it. This was possible because it had a flying ability, which was boosted by the phase that his summoner gave him. In my head, I was like "Yeah, I'm so done". Thankfully, those were the only 3 consecutive attacks it was able to fly and phase it's way out of. The third strike that followed in round 4 took it down. If that strike missed, I would've lost the battle because then, Immolation (which was the most powerful monster in my line up, shielding the weaker back line monsters) would've been killed, exposing my weak backline to open fire.

After taking that Basilisk down, the rest was a smooth sail cos it was clear I was winning the battle.
