My Played Video Games Review: The Death and Return of Superman for the Super Nintendo

The Death and Return of Superman is a side-scrolling beat -'em up video game released by Sunsoft for the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive consoles in 1994. Based on DC Comics' "The Death of Superman" storyline, the game includes many characters from the comics.

I remember that time during the early 1990s that I couldn't afford to buy the expensive trade paperback graphic novel of it. The Death and Return of Superman is one of the most famous and globally recognized comic book events ever. Many have tried to adapt this story arc into various forms of media like film, TV, and video games, but most attempts haven't been very successful. Only two projects have been completed and released: the direct-to-DVD animated feature film Superman - Doomsday, and this video game.

This game is perhaps the closest adaptation to the original story arc and is considered one of the best Superman video games ever made, which is a rare achievement.

The game was based on a highly controversial but wildly popular comic story arc during the 1990s. (Image source)

The Story

Get ready for an intense battle that brings the classic DC comic book series to life! As Superman, face off against the formidable Doomsday, the ruthless bringer of death and chaos! Then, take control of four different Supermen, each claiming to be the true Superman! Blast through 10 levels of super-charged combat and soar at incredible speeds until only the real Superman remains standing!

The Graphics and Sound

The game features good graphics that stand out in the genre. It offers a variety of characters, enemies, and backgrounds, each with unique abilities. The characters and movements are large, well-animated, and visually impressive, making the graphics exceptional for this type of game.

The soundtrack is very good, creating a dark, post-apocalyptic mood that fits the game's theme. Although not as varied as other aspects of the game, the music remains highly effective, especially for a beat -'em up. The sound effects are also noteworthy, with convincing and powerful blasts that enhances the satisfaction of combat, encouraging players to keep fighting.

The Gameplay

The main goal of this game, like any beat 'em up, is to defeat everything you see, whether it's alive or not, and even destroy public property. The developers have added some nice features that make it different from typical beat 'em ups. The movements and controls are simple enough, allowing you to smash enemies through windows and walls. You also have projectiles, bombs, and the ability to fly, though flying isn't very useful except in some parts of the game.

The game is one of the longest beat 'em ups ever made and is quite challenging, which can be a drawback since there are no save points. Another downside is the lack of a multiplayer option, but it doesn't detract much from the experience. A cool aspect of the game is discovering which Superman is the real one, adding an interesting twist to the story.

Replay value is almost poor. The game can become a bit repetitive after a few playthroughs. However, taking a few months' break can make it feel fresh and enjoyable again. The Death and Return of Superman is no exception to this rule.

My Verdict

This Superman game is the best one to play. It does justice to the character and features exciting elements like fighting Doomsday and playing as another kind of heir to Superman. Despite some flaws, it's a fine game that's worth playing through, especially on a rainy day.

Play it on the undeniably great Super Nintendo/Super Famicom or play it on a likable emulator.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!

simpler games from a simpler time. I never managed to play this one but was a fan of the beatemup genre in general.

The competition was really stiff for this one at that time.😮

I can't really remember but I think one of the first beat-em ups I ever played that stuck in my mind was Double Dragon on the NES and I loved it. These days I think that would only frustrate the hell outta me.

Double Dragon on the NES was great. Patience and strategy was needed for it.
