Hive Onboarding
by @barbie.mama
Yesterday my sister reached out to me for advice on what she should do about her deadbeat husband and her work situation. She’s been on OnlyFans supporting him for over a year and a half now, and as much as I love her, I think she deserves better. After a long conversation, I suggested she quit OnlyFans, rebuild her sense of self-worth, and join Hive. I helped her start an account (@badgirl.barbie) shortly after creating my own - so far I’m not sure she’ll stick with it, but I think it would be so good for her to tell her story and express herself creatively - so I hope she does!
Helping her made me realize that a lot of people could benefit from getting on Hive, especially with Ecency as an easy gateway. So, I decided to put together this quick guide to help new users get started, not just for my sister, but for anyone else curious about Hive.
What is Hive and Why Ecency?
Hive is a decentralized social platform where you own your content and can earn rewards for creating, curating, and engaging with posts. It’s built on a blockchain, so everything is transparent and secure. Unlike traditional social media platforms, here you’re not the product—you’re the creator, and you actually get paid for your contributions!
Ecency is one of the many front-ends for Hive, and it’s particularly great for beginners. Its user-friendly interface, easy-to-use mobile app, and built-in incentives (like point rewards for activity) make it the perfect place to start.
Getting Started with Ecency on Hive
Create an Account:
You’ll need to create a Hive account, which can be done directly through Ecency. Ecency offers both free and paid account creation options. The paid option gives you a little more security, but if you're new and just want to dive in, the free option works fine. My sister chose the free one, and it was quick and easy.Download the Ecency App or Use the Web Version:
Once you have an account, you can either download the Ecency app for mobile or use their website on a desktop. I personally love the app because it’s so convenient for keeping up with posts, replying to comments, and sharing content.Follow Communities that Match Your Interests:
Hive is filled with diverse communities. Whether you’re into gaming, photography, writing, or just blogging about life, there’s something for everyone. I joined a few lifestyle and creative communities when I started, which helped me find my voice. If you’re not sure where to start, @ecency regularly features interesting communities to explore.Engage and Earn:
One of the best parts of Hive is the ability to earn cryptocurrency for your activity. By upvoting, commenting, and creating content, you’ll accumulate rewards over time. You can also earn Ecency points, which can be used for boosting posts, promoting content, or even tipping other users. This reward system is what really sets Hive apart from other social platforms.Find a Mentor or Guide:
If you’re new and feeling a little lost, Hive has a strong mentoring culture. There are plenty of articles out there aimed at helping newbies, like this guide for beginners on Ecency’s own page. You’ll find a welcoming community, and many users are more than happy to help you navigate the platform, whether that’s setting up your wallet or explaining how posting rewards work. My sister was super nervous at first, but after a few friendly messages, she felt right at home.Be Consistent and Have Fun:
Hive and Ecency are all about building relationships and contributing to a positive space. The more you engage, the more opportunities you’ll have to grow and earn. I told my sister to just be herself and post consistently—whether it’s an update about her day, sharing her creative work, or commenting on someone else’s content. This is what makes Hive unique; it’s the interaction and support between users.
A Few Final Tips
- Security: Your Hive account comes with private keys that are crucial for keeping your funds and posts secure. Make sure to store these keys safely and never share them with anyone.
- Explore DApps: Hive isn’t just about blogging—there are games, NFT platforms, and other decentralized apps (DApps) that you can explore through the Ecency interface.
For anyone thinking about joining Hive, especially through Ecency, I hope this little guide helps. I’m excited to see my sister blossom here, and I hope you find your own space on Hive too. There’s so much opportunity to grow, share, and earn while being part of a creative and supportive community.
If you’re new to Hive, feel free to ask me anything. I’m here to help! After all, we’re all in this together, just trying to make sense of life and have some fun along the way. 🌸
