Behavioural Objective: During and by the end of the Lesson, the pupils should be able to:
a. define local ceremonies
b. identify types of local ceremonies
c. explain the importance of local ceremonies
d. list the materials associated with local ceremonies

Previous Knowledge

The pupils have attended local ceremonies like traditional marriage or new yam festivals before.

Instructional materials

A wall chart displaying the cultural ceremonies like ekpo masquerade, traditional marriage, awan mbamba etc

Introduction

The teacher begins the lesson by asking the pupils to list any local ceremonies thee attended last.

Presentation

Step 1 Meaning of Local Ceremonies

Local ceremonies are local events or activities that takes place at different period around our environment.

Step 2 Types of Local Ceremonies

  1. Festivals
  2. Marriage ceremonies
  3. Naming ceremonies
  4. Burial ceremonies

Festivals

These are done to celebrate and or to appease the gods of the land. E.g New yam festivals, street and national carnivals, Egungun which is popular among the Yorubas.

Step 3 Importance of Local Ceremonies

  1. Local ceremonies help promote our (Nigeria's) cultural heritage
  2. It is practiced to please the gods.
  3. It a means of creating a bonding and integration of different ethnic group.

Step 4 Materials associated with ceremonies

a. Local Bead
b. Cultural musical instrument e.g ikon, ntakrok, nsak etc.
c. Cola nut

  1. Local body tattoo
  2. Alcoholic drink ufofob

Evaluation

The teacher asks the following questions to ascertain that what was thought had been understood.

  1. What are Local ceremonies?
  2. Mention any three (3) types of Local Ceremonies.
  3. Explain any three importance of Local ceremonies
  4. List out any 3 materials associated or used for traditional ceremonies.

Conclusion

The teacher takes time to re-emphasize the key and salient points in the lesson before drawing up a conclusion through giving of notes on the board.
