Greetings!
Before I settled down to watch Kraven, I initially thought it was an Indian movie because of the Indian-like cover photos I had seen of it on Facebook. Little did I know it was an American movie and part of it was shot in Africa, particularly Tanzania. I haven’t been very familiar with Marvel characters, and I only recently found out that Kraven is one of the superheroes in the Marvel universe, so it's a Marcel movie too. It's a 2024 movie.
It had been a long time since I watched anything other than historical movies, so at first, I found this movie a bit uninteresting, given how addicted I’ve become to historical films. However, I eventually settled into it and found it quite interesting, despite a few shortcomings that left me frowning.
The Plot:
Mr. Kravinoff, a drug dealer, has two children(Sergei and Dimitri) and wants them to be braver than him so they can protect themselves and possibly take over his business when he dies.
One day, he took them hunting, and along the way, Sergei, his eldest son, was bitten by a lion and taken away. Calypso, a girl in the hood, saw where the lion dropped him and gave Sergei a magical mixture prepared by her grandmother. The substance brought Sergei back to life.
Not only did it revive him, but it also made him stronger. He decided to live in the hood, where he grew fond of animals and adopted their lifestyle. He became a hunter—a hunter of bad people, specifically bad people like his father. He created a list of targets and gave himself the name Kraven the Hunter.
The most action-packed and interesting part of the movie was when Rhino, his father’s enemy, attacked the family and kidnapped his brother. All hell broke loose as Kraven went all out to rescue his brother.
Criticism:
Maybe it’s because I haven’t been into this genre of movie for a while, but I found the slight magical elements unconvincing. The movie would have been much better if it had stuck to just science. Instead, characters magically appeared and disappeared without any major explanation of how such powers worked.
Yes, it’s a supernatural movie, but the fact that Kraven couldn’t die or even get hit by the countless bullets shot at him felt excessive. Movie directors need to do better. Those scenes, in particular, were not enjoyable for someone like me, who watches movies critically.
That said, I loved the fight scenes. Even though they were heavily influenced by the supernatural elements, the blows, hits, and gun impacts were very realistic and visually engaging.
Another thing I found very appealing was the simplicity of the English used in the movie. I didn’t need subtitles, and I understood everything clearly, which is unusual for me when watching foreign films.
Despite its flaws, I would rate this movie a 6/10.
