Als begeisterter Fan der Darkwave- und Gothic-Musikszene freue ich mich ganz besonders auf das Wave Gothic Treffen (WGT) in Leipzig im Mai. Das Festival, das seit 1992 ein fester Bestandteil der Goth-Subkultur ist, ist dafür bekannt, die besten und innovativsten Künstler des Genres zu präsentieren. In diesem Jahr sind auch zwei Bands dabei, die mir besonders viel bedeuten: Backworld und Ostara.

Backworld ist eine amerikanische Neofolk Band, die das Publikum mit ihrer einzigartigen Mischung aus traditioneller englischer Folkmusik, elektronischem Ambient und amerikanischen Dark Country Einflüssen in ihren Bann gezogen hat. Gegründet 1993 von Sänger und Gitarrist Joseph Budenholzer, hat sich die Besetzung der Gruppe im Laufe der Jahre verändert, wobei Budenholzer das einzige konstante Mitglied ist.

Mit einem ausgeprägten Interesse an christlichen Themen und traditioneller englischer Musik wurde der Sound von Backworld durch ihre frühen Veröffentlichungen geprägt, die stark von akustischen Gitarren, dezenter Keyboarduntermalung und Sprechgesang geprägt waren. Im Laufe der Zeit hat die Band traditionellere und klassische Instrumente wie Geige, Cello, Klarinette und Bodhrán eingesetzt und sich gleichzeitig dem Stil der amerikanischen Folkmusik der 1960er Jahre angenähert.

Ostara ist eine australische Band die man als Neo-Folk/Pop-Musik-Hybrid beschreiben kann. Die von Richard Leviathan (geboren als Richard Levy) und Timothy Jenn gegründete Band hat im Laufe der Jahre mehrere Besetzungswechsel durchgemacht, wobei Leviathan das einzige verbliebene Originalmitglied ist.

Trotz der Veränderungen ist die Musik von Ostara ihren Neo-Folk-Wurzeln treu geblieben, was sie zu einem Pflichttermin auf dem WGT macht.

As an avid fan of the darkwave and gothic music scene, I am particularly looking forward to the Wave Gothic Treffen (WGT) in Leipzig in May. The festival, which has been an integral part of the goth subculture since 1992, is known for presenting the best and most innovative artists in the genre. This year there are also two bands that mean a lot to me: Backworld and Ostara.

Backworld is an American neofolk band that has captivated audiences with their unique blend of traditional English folk music, electronic ambient and American dark country influences. Founded in 1993 by vocalist and guitarist Joseph Budenholzer, the group's lineup has changed over the years, with Budenholzer being the only constant member.

With a strong interest in Christian themes and traditional English music, Backworld's sound was shaped by their early releases, which were heavy on acoustic guitars, subtle keyboard backing and spoken word vocals. Over time, the band has incorporated more traditional and classical instruments such as violin, cello, clarinet and bodhrán, while moving closer to the style of American folk music of the 1960s.

Ostara is an Australian band that can be described as a neo-folk/pop music hybrid. Formed by Richard Leviathan (born Richard Levy) and Timothy Jenn, the band has undergone several line-up changes over the years, with Leviathan being the only remaining original member.

Despite the changes, Ostara's music has remained true to its neo-folk roots, making them a must-see at WGT.
