A Wisconsin Dutch Oven : Poor Man's Stew

This past weekend's food adventure, as usual, was inspired by a Van lifestyle YouTube video series I keep up with. With the weather turning cold here, my goal is to cook something new (and hopefully delicious) for the family every week. This past weekend's recipe forced me to break out our Dutch oven for the first time and make some Poor Man's Stew.

To begin with, I threw a tablespoon of non-salted grass-fed butter into the Dutch oven at medium heat. The recipe called for ghee, but my wife passed on it when she was at the store...so butter it was!

I then cut up a yellow onion and cried a bunch:

Once the oven heated up, I threw our CSA ground hamburger in with the onions and some minced garlic.

As the beef began to brown, I started to quickly prep the vegetables. I first cubed up four potatoes:

Then I diced up four carrots :

I also diced up some green onions to add to the stew:

And then threw them on the beef, white onion, and garlic. Hey, what can I say, I love onions!

Then threw the carrots and potatoes on top of that:

I decided to try some broccoli in the stew , too, so threw that in as well:

To finish up the stew, I then covered the bulk of veggies and meat with a beef broth and threw some cayenne pepper in the mix (salt, too).

I brought the stew to a boil:

And once to boil, turned the burner to low and covered...I then let it go for about an hour. Voila!

Coupled with some homemade bread, this little stew hit the spot and the family loved it.

This was my first #foodies Dutch oven experience; more to come. I have to say, I liked the ability to brown meat in this thing and then overlay veggies on top of it. I'm thinking I might try a lamb meal next with this cooking tool

Thanks for checking out my humble entry into the #foodies community. Until next time...

My Swedish grandma used to make this when I was little in my Dutch grandpa's Dutch oven just South of Wisconsin in Rockford, Illinois. Is absolutely delicious😋🤤🤤🤤💟

It's a good one, yeah!

My Norwegian grandma and grandpa didn't have this recipe for us when we visited, but I do remember the blood sausage, lutefisk, and lefse (lefse really being the only thing I enjoy seeking out to this day). I might get back into the lutefisk thing though as I get older

Haha! No blood sausage for me😬 Saw enough of that in France😖 The only Swedish dish I remember was her Swedish meatballs😋 I probably ate the lutefisk but not sure about the Swedish version of the lefse. My grandma immigrated to the U.S. with her parents and 2 systers when she was 8 years old back in 1910. I was only 9 when she passed away so only remember some dishes and her sing songy Swedish accent when she spoke. My Dutch grandpa was a 12th generation of Dutch immigrants I do believe🤔 But the Dutch oven they used often as before I was born they had a restaurant in Rockford. I took 3 semesters of Swedish in college in honor of her. I only wished she had lived long enough to teach me to cook. I finally learned that when I left to live in France💟🙏

Thanks @anggreklestari and @foodiesunite - the onions were delicious, and I will add even more next go around, lol

In the past, I really want this dutch oven, but the price is so expensive here :(

I saw you have good experiences with the dutch oven. Maybe you can try to make homemade bread with that oven?

Oh yeah, we are going to try that this next weekend for the Thanksgiving holiday over here...I think we have some no-knead bread recipe we're going to try.

We were lucky to get this oven as a gift for our wedding, so we were fortunate to have this to play around with. I love it

I'd be happy to be a poor man if I got to eat like this.

Apparently, our poor ancestors could only afford ground cattle beef...nothing fancy like filet mignon that other fancy folks could eat.

Many of my ancestors couldn't even afford ground beef so they left Cornwall for Australia for a better life...I'm not sure how much better it was, but it was clearly better than starving to death I guess.

As did my Irish ancestors - they all seemed to end up in Ontario Canada, which I guess was better than dealing with potato crisis. What a time to have been alive - I can't even imagine

People were tougher back then.
