Stir Fry English Gourd Chinese Style

Okay, I must admit, this is my first time cooking English gourd. I tasted it few times at Chinese economy mixed rice shops and also few times at my Aunt's place. However, I had never bothered to cook it eventhough I super love it, I am not sure why. Maybe it was defaultly thought that this vegetable is to be consumed outside. Until that day, my Aunt gave me one. She asked me whether I cooked this before. Then, of course, she briefly taught me how to cook. Basically, it was the same method of stir frying any vegetables.

Stir Fry English Gourd with Pork Slices

Looks simple yet appetizing, right? I must say this was a successful first-try of stir frying English gourd. So I know the next round when I see English gourd at market, I will definitely buy it. Easy cooking too involving just a couple of ingredients and some basic Chinese seasonings.

Ingredients:

  • a handful of chopped garlic and rose onions
  • julienned English gourd
  • julienned carrots
  • marinated pork slices (with soy sauce, pepper and corn flour)
  • oyster sauce
  • salt and pepper

Steps:

In a pan, heated up the oil, followed by stir frying the garlic and onions till aromatic. After this, carrots would be added as I prefer a softer texture of carrots. When the carrots had become soft, the pork slices would be added in. Fry them together to blend all the taste.

Lastly, the julienned English gourd would be added in to stir fry with the rest of ingredients, followed by adding in oyster sauce, some salt and pepper. Continue to stir fry until the English gourd had soften.

Scooped it out into a serving bowl and there we had it, a dish of vegetables and protein, simple yet tasty enough to eat together with our plate of rice.

I really love easy and fast cook like this, healthy, nutritious and delicious too. Eating at home has its own benefits in terms of I can adjust the seasoning to my liking and not too salty or too sweet for the family. I also love to pack food from other vendors as a way to support small local business, but I try to cook few times in a week to save some money.
