Hello everyone

Last Thursday, I had the chance to visit a restaurant owned by my childhood friend — someone I grew up with because our houses were right next to each other. She decided to open a restaurant near her mother’s home, on what used to be a cornfield. Right in the middle of that land lies a small waterfall, the very same one where we used to play together as kids. Over the years, she transformed the area around the waterfall into a cozy nature-style restaurant with streams flowing right through it. The place is called “Hey Captain Jack”. Before visiting, it’s best to reserve a table in advance to make sure your dining experience goes smoothly.

When the day of my reservation finally arrived, I made my way to “Hey Captain Jack.” Unfortunately, I didn’t get to meet my childhood friend that day — she and her husband were away on a trip. It’s been more than 15 years since we last saw each other, so I was a little disappointed. Instead, I was welcomed by her son, who has learned the art of cooking directly from his mother. Interestingly, her son is also a good friend of my own son, which made the encounter feel even more connected and meaningful.

My friend’s son immediately recognized me. With a warm smile, he invited us to choose a table among the many set right in the middle of the cascading stream. The waterfall may not be large, but it’s truly beautiful — a little sanctuary of nature with its gentle flow and fresh, calming atmosphere.

The restaurant also has several cats wandering around, adding to the cozy atmosphere. One of them — a sweet orange tomcat — came out to greet me as if he were part of the staff. No matter where I walked, he would trot ahead of me, almost like a personal guide leading the way. 🐾🐈

The seating at Hey Captain Jack is truly one-of-a-kind. Small wooden huts with leaf-covered roofs are built right above the stream, giving diners the chance to relax with their feet in the cool water while enjoying their meals. It feels simple, rustic, and wonderfully refreshing.

Walking further inside, I found more huts scattered along the flowing water. Each one is surrounded by greenery, with swings and wooden bridges adding to the playful charm. It almost feels like stepping into a secret forest hideaway. 🌳✨

But the real highlight is the waterfall itself. Even though it’s not very big, it cascades beautifully over limestone steps, creating a soothing sound that fills the whole area. Sitting near it, with the cool mist brushing against your skin, is the kind of peace that makes you forget the world outside.

After I chose my seat, the orange cat decided to join me, sitting right beside me with the most adorable expression. I couldn’t help but smile at his curious green eyes and calm presence. Too bad I didn’t bring any cat treats with me — I’m sure he would have been even happier. 🐱💛

After settling in, I asked my friend’s son to recommend some dishes. We went with two highlights: stir-fried prawns with curry powder and a steaming bowl of spicy pork soup (Tom Saep). Not long after, the food arrived — fresh, colorful, and full of irresistible aroma.

The curry prawns were rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced with the sweetness of the prawns and the creamy spice of the curry. The Tom Saep, on the other hand, delivered a fiery kick with every spoonful — tangy, spicy, and deeply satisfying. 🌶️🔥

Every bite reminded me of why Thai food is so special: bold flavors, fresh ingredients, and a comforting balance that makes you want to keep eating. Simply put, the meal was delicious from start to finish.

As I finished my meal, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for this experience. Even though I didn’t get the chance to meet my childhood friend after so many years, being at her restaurant still felt meaningful. Watching her son carry on the family recipes and passion made me admire how this little corner of nature has been transformed into something so welcoming and full of life.

Between the sound of the waterfall, the playful company of the orange cat, and the flavors of the dishes, the whole visit felt like a blend of nostalgia and discovery. Hey Captain Jack isn’t just a restaurant — it’s a place where memories, nature, and food come together in the most delightful way. 🌿🍴

If you ever find yourself in Phop Phra, Tak, don’t miss the chance to stop by. Come with family, bring friends, or simply enjoy a quiet moment for yourself. Either way, you’ll leave with a happy heart, a full stomach, and maybe even a new cat friend to guide you along the way. 🐾💛
