Nainital is a gorgeous Himalayan town in the Kumaun Region of India's Uttarakhand State (Northern state of India).
It is located at the height of around 2,000 meters. Formerly a British town for vacationing & leisure, it is now a tourist destination with the famous Naini lake right in the centre.
There's a popular story of the death of the Goddess Sati associated with Nainital- out of grief lord Shiva carried Sati's body and roamed around the universe with it. Lord Shiva took the body to Lord Vishnu who cut Sati's body into 52 body parts using his Sudarshan Chakra. These parts fell on Earth to become sacred sites where come to pay homage to the Goddess. Since the eye of Sati fell here, this place was called Nain-tal (lake of the eye).
There's a high altitude zoological park in Nainital where they organise wonderful conservation programs. The zoo has many big cats in different enclosures and endangered species like the Red Panda, Tibetan Wolves etc.
To reach zoo you either need to take cars going there for 10 rupees per head or if you want to feel the place I'll suggest you to walk to the zoo.
You can also enjoy row boating in the lake.
There's a beautiful trek running alongside the Naini Lake where you get to see some beautiful birds. It starts from the Naini temple at the Tibetan market.
During the second day of my stay in Nainital one of my friends took me to a sunset point near the Shri Aurobindo Society complex. Believe me- the Sunset there was one of the most stunning ones that I ever saw.
If you are in India do visit Nainital. You can reach via Haldwani by road. There are many more attractions at Nainital which you can enjoy. There is a ropeway which you can take to reach the highest peak of Nainital and many other adjoining places like Sattal which is famous among bird watchers.
