How These Stones Move By Themselves ?

in Wonders of Nature2 years ago

You might have seen some posts on the internet about sailing stones that move by themselves on a Death Valley surface, long trails behind them. It's very strange and doesn't seem logical that quite a large stone can move by itself on a flat surface. Is someone moving them around? Nah there is a perfectly natural cause that makes this happen.

It remained a mystery for a long while when in 2014 some brothers finally discovered how these rocks move. They were also the first persons to see these stones in motion from a timelapse video they took.

When it rains, it makes a thin cover of water on the surface. It freezes in the night and when it starts to melt, some moving panels of ice also carry and push these stones with them. The wind also needs to be quite strong in order to move the ice panels that push stones. This can only happen in the winter because other seasons are too warm for ice to form. When the water evaporates the result is as you see on the photo above and it doesn't make sense how that moves.

Have you ever been to death valley and seen these trails? Tho I read something that people have stolen many of the stones that make these trails. I don't get it, why should one steal these stones some people are weird.
I sure hope I can visit Death Valley someday. Not only to see these stones but this place is unique overall.
