Hello Hivers and lovers of fascinating orchids. As a biologist by profession, photographer and specialist in the cultivation of ornamental plants, it is very common to always have the camera in my hand focusing on some plant. In this case, my objective was some orchids grown in private collections in my country. Although Cuba has few endemic species of orchids with showy blooms, a large number of species and hybrids have been introduced over the years by private growers. The few Cuban species that could be commercially exploited are (mostly) in danger of extinction due to habitat breakdown and excessive extraction.

Hola Hivers y amantes de las fascinantes orquídeas. Como biólogo de profesión, fotógrafo y especialista en el cultivo de plantas ornamentales, es muy común tener siempre a mi mano la cámara enfocando a alguna planta. En este caso mi objetivo fueros algunas orquídeas cultivadas en colecciones privadas de mi país. A pesar de que Cuba cuenta con pocas especies endémicas de orquídeas con floraciones vistosas, se han introducido durante años gran cantidad de especies e híbridos por parte de cultivadores privados. Las pocas especies cubanas que podrías tener una explotación comercial se encuentran (en su mayoría) en peligro de extinción por ruptura del hábitat y extracción desmedida.

The orchids that I present in this article were presented at an orchid festival that is held every 3-6 months in Havana, Cuba. In this festival, a large number of growers gather to exhibit their best specimens and offer some species to visitors. It is common to organize a contest with different themes such as: The orchid with the most showy flowers, the most striking stand and the healthiest orchid. There are other topics where photographers and workshops can participate to learn more about orchid cultivation in general.

Las orquídeas que presento en este artículo fueron presentadas en un festival de orquídeas que se celebra cada 3-6 meses en La Habana, Cuba. En dicho festival se reúnen un gran número de cultivadores que exponen sus mejores ejemplares y ofertan algunas especies a los visitantes. Es frecuente que se organice un concurso con diferentes temáticas como por ejemplo: La orquídea con flores más vistosas, el stand más llamativo y la orquídea más saludable. Existen otras temáticas en donde pueden participar fotógrafos y talleres para aprender más sobre el cultivo de orquídeas en general.

Additionally, in these events it is common for other growers to join in offering other vegetable groups for sale such as cacti, succulents, begonias, among others. The objective of these variants is to attract more visitors who may be interested in the cultivation of plants in general and become aware of the care of Nature.

Adicionalmente, en dichos eventos es frecuente que se sumen otros cultivadores que ofrecen otros grupos vegetales en venta como cactus, suculentas, begonias, entre otros. El objetivo de estas variantes es atraer a más visitantes que se puedan interesar en el cultivo de plantas en general y tomar conciencia del cuidado de la Naturaleza.

This beautiful representative of the genus Vanda seemed very attractive to me because of the insect-like shape of the flower. This strategy is very common in orchids to attract pollinators looking to mate.

Este hermoso representante del género Vanda me pareció muy atractivo por la forma similar a un insecto de la flor. Es muy común esta estrategia en las orquídeas para atraer a polinizadores que buscan aparearse.

In this image we can see the flowers of a very attractive species of the genus Dendrobium. The white color is very bright.

En esta imagen observamos las flores de una especie del género Dendrobium muy atractiva. El color blanco es muy vistoso.

This other beautiful hybrid is called Epidendrum ˡ Orange Blaze ˡ and has flowers with reddish petals and a very contrasting beautiful yellow lip.

Este otro hermoso híbrido es llamado Epidendrum ˡ Orange Blaze ˡ y posee flores con pétalos rojizos y un hermoso labelo amarillo muy contrastante.
