In few days time the war between Russia and Ukraine will mark one year. But amidst the devastating effects of the war on Ukrainians and the economy, the Ukrainian government is still fighting corruption. This to me shows the strength and pressure of the Ukrainian government led by Zelenskiy.

No society can grow or develop where there's rapacious corruption and the way forward in achieving meaningful development is by the elimination of corruption and corrupt leaders and citizens to the bearest minimum.

Ukrainian authorities raided an influential billionaire’s home in what an ally of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy touted as a sweeping wartime clampdown on corruption that would change the country.

Ihor Kolomoisky held shares in two oil companies, Ukrnafta and Ukrtatnafta, which had both been seized under martial law last November after Ukraine’s security service (SBU) said it uncovered the embezzlement of more than $1bn.Source

It's so pathetic for someone to embezzle such an amount ($1bn) of money from a warring nation. It shows the level of corruption that could be going on in regions of war. This just reminded me of the fact that many allow wars to continue in order for them to make enough financial gains from it. In this case it wasn't in the area of ammunition sales but in the area of embezzlement of public funds.

Many Ukrainians since the inception of war in February last year have been suffering from one hardship to the other, while most families found it very difficult to feed, some rich people are busy taking advantage of the war to enrich themselves. This is disheartening.

“Every criminal who has the audacity to harm Ukraine, especially in the conditions of war, must clearly understand that we will put handcuffs on his hands,” Ukraine’s security service chief Vasyl Malyuk said on the SBU Telegram channel.

Kolomoisky, currently facing a fraud case in the US, has been at the centre of corruption allegations and court disputes for years, which Western aid donors have said must be resolved for Kyiv to continue gaining support.Source

Many believe that the war situation will make Kolomoisky to change but the country will only change those who wants to change and the war situation cannot stop the government from implementing and executing cases of corruption within the state. This to me is a right step towards development and once the war is over and the rehabilitation of the state is taken care of, Ukraine will be a better place.

According to Ukraine President Zelenskiy during the European Union Summit:

“We are preparing new reforms in Ukraine. Reforms that will change the social, legal and political reality in many ways, making it more human, transparent and effective,” he said.Source

This is an assurance that his administration is still focused on the complete fight against corruption and bring Ukraine to the point of being set for sporadic growth in all ramifications.
