Before I get into the NCAA men's basketball action, I wanted to give a little bit of a shout out to my niece who is now in her senior year of high school. She has been on the varsity basketball team pretty much her whole high school career, but this year she is a starter and she is one of her teams co-captains which is awesome.
I'm so proud of her as I am sure you have hard me say time and again. Of course, I am also proud of all my other nieces and nephews, whether I regularly post about them on Hive or not. I have a feeling once they get to the high school level I will be boring you with their stats just like I do my two oldest nieces.
They had one of their first regular season games last night against a team from New Albany, OH. Despite a pretty big lead going into halftime for my nieces team, the Eagles stormed back and they made it a close game going into the final minutes.
As you can see from the opening photo, they were having some issues with their camera system for about half the game. Luckily they got it taken care of before the teams switched sides at halftime!
Ultimately, my nieces team persevered and they came away with the 60 to 54 victory. They also played on Wednesday night and ended up losing that game 39 to 30. My niece had some awesome plays on defense and offense, so she hopefully isn't too mad about the loss.
Okay, onto the NCAA. I'm going to pick up where we left off last Thursday. Remember, I mostly cover upsets in the top 25, so I am not going to give you the results of every single game. Especially this time of year when so many cupcake games are being played.
That being said, I will always cover Michigan State, and this is also the time of year when those early season holiday tournaments are being held. There are several taking place across the country right now, and even probably some outside of the country. I'll try to cover some of those as best I can.
(13) Baylor had a close call against (22) St. John's last Thursday when they needed two overtimes to beat the Red Storm 99 to 98. On Friday, there were nine top 25 games and only one of them was an upset. Hats off to Nebraska for taking down (14) Creighton 74 to 63. I should also mention that Wisconsin has found their way into the top 25 with a (19) ranking.
Saturday gave us five games and sadly, not a single one of them was an upset.
Sunday gave us only one game and it was (19) Wisconsin taking down Pittsburgh 81 to 75.
Monday is when some of those early season tournaments started. Memphis ousted (2) UConn 99 to 97 in overtime. That overtime game pushed back the start of the Michigan State game. They ended up beating Colorado in a very excellent technical game by MSU. Their defense was superb even if they offense wasn't hitting their shots.
The final score of that MSU/Colorado game was 72 to 56.
(4) Auburn had a close call against (5) Iowa State, but they beat them 83 to 81.
On Tuesday, we had eight games in the top 25 and there were some big shake ups. In fact, just about half of them were upsets by an unranked or lower ranked team.
San Diego State beat (21) Creighton 71 to 53, and (2) UConn lost again in the Maui tournament against Colorado 73 to 72. Oregon beat (20) Texas A&M 80 to 70, and (9) Alabama beat (6) Houston 85 to 80 in overtime.
Michigan State dropped a tough game against a really good Memphis team to find themselves in one of the lower place games in the Maui tournament that they are playing in right now.
Wednesday night there were a massive 13 games in the top 25.
Louisville upset (14) Indiana big time with an 89 to 61 win in one of the Battle for Atlantis games. Meanwhile, West Virginia took (3) Gonzaga into overtime and won that game 86 to 78. That means that Louisville and West Virginia should be playing each other for the title in the Battle for Atlantis.
Meanwhile, in the Maui invitational, (4) Auburn took the title beating Memphis 90 to 76. In the third place game, my own Michigan State Spartans fought (17) North Carolina into overtime and took the win 94 to 91. Actually from what I saw of the game, MSU was dominating, so I was kind of surprised when I woke up this morning and saw it went into overtime.
Finally, that other team from Michigan also had a good night beating (22) Xavier 78 to 53. Nebraska had a close call against (9) Alabama, but ultimately fell short 95 to 90.
If you can tear yourself away from football at all today, there are seven or so games being held in the top 25. Grab some turkey and enjoy!
