Elderly persons with high LDL live longer - LDL is inversely associated with mortality in the elderly (over 60)

This is an interesting and unusual result. The result shows that LDL in specific is inversely associated with mortality in the elderly.

High LDL-C is inversely associated with mortality in most people over 60 years. This finding is inconsistent with the cholesterol hypothesis (ie, that cholesterol, particularly LDL-C, is inherently atherogenic). Since elderly people with high LDL-C live as long or longer than those with low LDL-C, our analysis provides reason to question the validity of the cholesterol hypothesis.

Should we question the cholesterol hypothesis? Of course mortality in specific doesn't necessarily mean caused by heart disease and people might simply die of other diseases.

Nice post. The article Cardiovascular medicine (Impact factor 1,6) raises and important question about that validity of the increased cholesterol, increased mortality-hypothesis. My view is that the hypthesis is false and that high LDL-cholesterol is healthy (given you do not have a genetic disease affecting lipoprotein). LDL also has an important function in the body as a scavanger (i.e. bacterial endotoxins). Statins ('anti'-cholesterol) medicine, such as atorvastatin (Lipitor, blockbuster, huge cash cow for Pfizer) decrease risk of myocardial infarction. However, I do think the mechanism is via the anti-inflammatory effect of statins and not the cholesterol lowering effect.

Thanks for the great post. I think we should actually almost question everything. Much research concerning health that becomes commonly accepted advice always has a chance to be disproven. For instance, besides cholesterol being blamed for heart disease, fat especially saturated fat was often seen as a culprit. However, there's quite a bit of research that shows that fat can actually keep you full for longer and isn't as bad as it seems to be. I think it general we should keep an open mind and continue further research in these areas.

@dana-edwards, our science enables us to question everything especially if it's changing the life span or cursing human beings in any way. I actually liked this because I'm not sure why but I always feared loosing my parents one day because they suffer from a lot of diseases including high cholesterol. I would enjoy showing them this

Well, this is evidence that it might be BS but there is also evidence in support of it. So which evidence is the strongest? And that is why my post on evidence based medicine is important.

Well, the science that the cholesterol hypothesis is based on is pretty bad. It's a little bit like diabetes..you get diabetes, and the government guidelines tell you to continue to eat carbohydrates. People who on the other hand start eating less carbs and more fat don't even need insulin. I've seen it up close on relatives..they have high blood pressure and are being told to eat less fat. They cut out all the fat, but continues to eat alot of sugar, and they start using statins. Sure, their bloodpressure goes down, but they continue to stay overweight and then they develop diabetes instead. Now they're on insulin and statins - and all the sideffects. Instead of just cutting out a lot of sugar/carbs and start exercising more. I know it's anectdotal , but myself, and all other people I know that has a high fat diet and exercise moderately - at age 35-40..perfect blood pressure, perfect blood insulin, no overweight.

thanks for your post and encouraging people to question... there is so much misinformation about "good" and "bad" cholesterol and it's relationship to heart disease and those who are Doctors or Nutritionists and speak out against the status quo and get people to question what we've always been told are victimized by Big Food and Big Pharma who stand to lose a lot of money if the truth became widely accepted.

I often times defensive in what I do and in what I eat in particular, particularly about this topic of living long.

My goal is actually to hit at least 101 years since my existence, too ambitious lol!

I'm kinda defensive about my lifestyle that any attempt that contradict what I'm doing or EATING or NOT EATING would find me bothered and try to explain that what I'm doing or eating or not eating is the right one. Thus, it gives a negative impact in my behavior or psychological being emotionally. Which is actually not a healthy thing in my own point of view.

Now, I realize that I have to respect my self, respect other people and get along in a healthy way.

Too much cholesterol or less cholesterol or dying early or dying at 123, it really doesn't matter for me now and never try to argue on things or any other things which will give an opposite impact in my life and to others life.

Not unusual at all. LDL is esential for good health. Check out the ketogenic diet which is not actually a diet.

Turns out that what kills you in heart disease protects you from other diseases.
