Fairy Tale comes alive on stage !
Hans Christian Anderson from Denmark is one of the most famous authors of fairy tales. Visitors to Copenhagen can see the famous Little Mermaid statue on the side of the river and his books are known worldwide and read in many different languages.
I recall listening to a recording of The Snow Queen with my own children. The evil snow queen sends shards of glass which hit the eye of a young boy called Kay who is captured by the Snow Queen and taken to the frozen north. He is changed to an evil boy as he comes under the Snow Queen’s spell. The rest of the story is the quest by his friend Gerda to rescue him. There are many dangers to overcome. A scary story as I recall but one which has been transposed in a magical way by Ballet Theatre UK to a dance show which they are touring this year.
Billed as a Christmas show at the Dome in Brighton the international dancers took us through the fairy tale with the quest for Kay and the adventures on the way. The original concept of Ballet Theatre UK was to provide a platform for talented young dancers to perform the highest quality of ballet in provincial theatres throughout the UK. They have been achieving this for the last ten years now and provided ballet for all to enjoy. The Company has grown and now engages more than twenty dancers, hand selected from around the globe, each year.
The Snow Queen has been touring within the covid restrictions. The show in Brighton certainly brought the stage alight with a magical performance with great choreography and magnificent costumes. It is touring over the next year all over the UK and certainly one to watch.
