Surge Review!

Over the holidays I was able to pick The Surge up on sale at my local game market, was it worth the money?

Definitely yes and definitely no.

The Surge is a sci-fi game with a fairly similar combat and gameplay style to the dark souls series, as well as bloodborne.

That means The Surge is hard, although easier than bloodborne, it's still incredibly difficult to make significant progress in a single run unless you are incredibly good at the game.

The world in The Surge is fantastic, it gives off the right atmosphere. I'm not sure how to explain it. The world just feels right, I don't feel things have been uselessly added for the sake of filling the world. Everything has a place and a reason to be there. It's great world building and makes me eager to explore the world more.

COMBAT

The game does have a few unique features that separate it from other games in the genre. The Surge has a limb removal feature. What happens is that you select a part of the body, and on low health you can remove the body part, and doing so allows you to salvage that part. This is how you acquire equipment as well, although equipment is mostly done through crafting.

This is by far my favourite part of the game. Removing limbs is just fun. The combat feels heavy so removing a limb or a head feels like an accomplishment rather than just par for the course.

Different weapons also play differently and have impacts on how you approach enemies, since with heavier weapons you cannot kill an enemy easily without a full stamina bar. Lighter weapons it becomes easier to hit and dodge, but you have to become more aware of not accidentally finding a 2nd monster.

Otherwise combat is pretty much the same as dark souls, so veterans of dark souls will feel fairly comfortable with the combat.

GRAPHICS

The game is beautiful, there isn't much to say otherwise. It's colorful when it needs to be and dark when it needs to be. Reds and blues stand out among the various metallic colours that take up a large part if the scenery.

I often felt while playing bloodborne that the game simply lacked colour. Of course while that fit in with the theme, I personally tend to prefer colour than blacks. Surge delivered that and I was pleased.

OVERALL

I will admit that I've yet to complete the game and have not been able to put in enough hours to really see everything, but that does not mean I won't occasionally go back to have my butt handed to me every time I launch the game.

Overall it's a enjoyable experience and I had fun. I'm not a person who loves dark souls or bloodborne, but I enjoyed Surge despite its similarities with its cousins.

I will definitely return to The Surge, as soon as my pride heals and I have the time to "git good".

"Definitely yes and definitely no." hmm! :P

I know what you mean though mate, some of it is so cool but the whole thing got boring for me pretty quickly!

The game is great but makes me feel inadequate by the end haha.
