Game platform with 16 bit visuals sounds outdated in the era of 3D games that are increasingly generic and mushrooming today. But fans of this one genre is still widely found and even continue to be developed with outstanding quality improvement. "Iconoclasts" is one example of the game with a classic style but made with modern and interesting flavors.
"Iconoclasts" developed since 2010 by Joakim Sandberg, arguably this is an ambitious Sandberg project. Previously Sandberg had made a platform game titled "Noitu Love 2: Devolution" in 2012. The game managed to get a positive response from gamers and game critics. Then whether "Iconoclasts" would also have the same fate or instead create repetitions that culminate in boring things?
Ordinary Gameplay with Many Fresh Content Developments.
Like most platform games in general, space restrictions are a challenge for Sandberg to make "Iconoclasts" do not get bogged down in boring stuff. If bro sis is the kind of gamer who likes to play platform games, it will surely feel that "Iconoclasts" have a combination of some popular games like "Ori and the Blind Forest", "Valdis Story", and "Hollow Knight".

Especially against the big boss, the space provided by the increasingly narrow with the game environment adjustment should be used to find weaknesses and effective mechanisms in defeating the enemy.
Content such as skill and weapons that can be used, not only to defeat the enemy but also solve the puzzle is a refreshing combination. One example is a bomb weapon that is also used to create momentum for a platform to become an elevator so as to reach a platform that is high enough to be easier.
"Iconoclasts" can be called a cool labyrinth that invites us to get lost deeper until finally felt relieved after finding various answers and key problem solvers. But do not get lost into the hearts of people yes, bro sis. Nuisance. Hehe. It's kind of an open world game but with a 2D interface design.

Stories are a very important element. Through the story, be it gameplay and various content that appears will feel very aligned. The premise of the story in "Iconoclasts" can be said to be quite severe, because the theme of the story alludes to the politics, beliefs, and social influences formed by the political and trust elements. About a resource possessed by nature to balance the world but be misused for a particular interest.
"Iconoclasts" appear with a dark world, where the lives of people are overshadowed by dirty politics as well as disgraceful acts that use trust as a weapon to strengthen power. This theme is highly relevant to today's world, even to Indonesia.
The heavy premise can be easily accepted because of the fresh, colorful 16-bit display combined with easy-to-digest and entertaining dialogue and narration. Some of the humor as well as the point of view of many types of NPC characters are found to unite the unity of a surprising story.
It's an unexpected experience to find such a theme in a cute and funny platform game like this.
Identical Chiptune-Based Musical Types
It's unexpected Sandberg has a good musical taste. Although every music comes with chiptune style, but some tones will make you all remember with the legendary popular classical music. One example of the music in this game is called "Success", a combination of piano playing with the cheerful chipsune bits with the elements of Canon Rock that are familiar to the ear.
There are approximately 9 music that will accompany the excitement of playing "Iconoclasts", ranging from casual simple music, to the thrilling music filled with drum beat combined with an electro piano.

Seven years Sandberg sacrifices in designing this game is not a waste. Although done solely alone, he managed to give a predicate to himself that he has the ability that can not be underestimated by the big developers.
All the elements Sandberg enters into "Iconoclasts" make this game feel perfect even though some minor minor things are still there. Sandberg's remarkable dedication to revive the platform genre, deserves a very high appreciation.
This game has started release on Playstation 4 and Steam (for PC) on January 23, 2018. So far, "Iconoclasts" made it into the list of mandatory platform games.
