1.0 INTRODUCTION
Acrylic sheet is a versatile, glasslike construction material that can be cut or shaped for a wide variety of items. Straight cuts of the acrylic sheet can be made on an ordinary table saw, but completing a successful cut requires care and attention.

Incorporating glass into a woodworking project can add an interesting design element, but it can be an expensive proposition to have glass cut to a custom size by a professional to match the specifications of your project.
Acrylic offers a nice alternative for woodworkers because it is almost indistinguishable from glass to the casual onlooker, but it can be cut using the standard table saw that you have in your shop.

Another advantage to using acrylic is that it is not prone to shattering like glass, so it makes for a safer cutting and installation process, and also can endure more abuse through the normal tools of family living. Understanding the requirements for proper equipment and process can enable you to easily learn how to cut acrylic to the desired size without having to incur the cost and endure the delay that custom glass cutting requires.

1.1 HOW TO CUT ACRYLIC SHEET WITH DREMEL

This is the most common method, and since saw blades are easy to find, it’s a great option for everyone regardless of experience. For this method, you can cut multiple sheets at the same time by stacking them.

Using a table saw with closely spaced teeth (such as those used when plywood). If the blades are much wider, you run the risk of cutting your plastic. While you can use blades designed for wood, there are ones specifically designed for acrylic which is best for frequent cutting projects.

Acrylic is different than cutting many other materials because the dimensions need to be exact to ensure proper fitting with other pieces. Incorrectly cutting acrylic can be a costly mistake if you need to sand down inches off the material to make sure it’s even and unchipped, so always use the sharpest blade possible.

The size of the table saw most commonly used is a medium-duty model with an arbor of 5/8 to 1-inch diameter and powered by a 1.5 to a 5hp motor. Special fixtures are often used to hold the work steady for accurate cutting.

1.2 IMPORTANCE NOTICE.

Using a blade that is too coarse on veneers and laminates will cause undue chipping. Using a blade which is too fine for ripping solid lumber can burn the sheet, damage the blade, put undue wear on the motor, and even cause the sheet to ride up over the top of the blade and cause a kickback.

THE REQUIREMENTS ARE;
Tape measure
T-rectangular
Yardstick
Grease pencil
Table saw
Flat working area
Saw or drill for polishing edges
Protective respiratory equipment
Safety glasses

1.2 STEPS INVOLVE IN CUTTING ACRYLIC SHEET WITH TABLE SAW

  1. Fine-Tooth Blade: When making straight cuts in acrylic sheet, use a fine-toothed carbide-tipped or high-speed steel blade specifically designed for acrylic cutting. You can also use a sharp fine-toothed plywood or laminate cutting blade if you aren’t cutting enough acrylic to warrant buying a special saw blade. Run the blade at around 3,450 revolutions per minute. Check the saw fence and any sawdust removal system for correct operation.

  2. Making the Cut: The saw blade height should be only a half-inch higher than the thickness of the acrylic sheet you are cutting.

  3. The saw table should be free of dust and debris.

  4. Set the saw fence to the desired sheet width.

  5. Lay the sheet on the saw table with the masking-film side down and the edge tight against the fence.

  6. Start the saw and carefully feed the sheet straight into the blade, cutting at a rate of about 3 inches per second.

  7. Watch closely for signs of melting and slow the feed rate if necessary. When done, remove sawdust from the sheet with compressed air and wipe with a damp cloth to dissipate static electricity.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN CUTTING ACRYLIC SHEET

Always wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from shattered acrylic pieces. Additionally, it’s important to work with acrylic in a well-ventilated area because cutting acrylic sheet can release vapors that will irritate your respiratory system.

Do not allow the spinning rotary tool to contact any part of the body
Wear eye protection when making your miter and coping cuts.
