Learning does not only end inside the classroom; it happens everywhere. Additionally, a teacher is not the sole provider of knowledge and wisdom; every experience one goes through and every person one encounters would serve as contributing factors to the development of a learner.
Having said, conducting extra-curricular activities is necessary in order to produce well-rounded students who are strong in all four domains of learning: physical, social, affective, and cognitive. Enabling learning everywhere is the goal!
TNTS Club Day
One of the most anticipated activities in our school, Tagum National Trade School, is the Club Day. During this celebration, the students are given the chance to showcase their skills and abilities by designing their own booth and display the outputs their clubs have accomplished so far. They are also given the autonomy to decide what activities they want to employ to attract more members.
In our school, I am the adviser of two clubs: the Reading Club and The Talking Hands Club wherein our two scholars, Mark and Myke, are part of. For today's update, I will focus more on the latter.
The Talking Hands Club was organized and are facilitated by Ms. Ruby Perez (my shadow teacher and interpreter) and yours truly. I gave the name of the Club. :D It was named as such because the members of this club are students who are deaf and mute, so, they communicate using their hands.
For now, there are 17 deaf and mute students who are enrolled in our school and all of them are part of the said club. Nine of them are in Grade 12, who were all under my advisory last year; while the other eight are in Grade 11 and are currently in my class.
What I love about these students is their GRIT, something other regular students don't have. They are passionate, driven, and committed despite their disabilities and because of this I don't mind spending extra time and effort just to ensure they get the best education and opportunities.
Club Day Preparation
Days before the club day, Ma'am Ruby and I called for a meeting and we planned out what to do. We let the students decide what they want to showcase in their booth in terms of design, activities, and output display. Their ideas seemed great so we decided to push through with their plans.
The day has finally arrived and everyone was ecstatic in setting up their booth. Their booth was simple, but they utilized their space well by displaying their outputs and making money out of those.
Currently, all the deaf and mute students are enrolled in Food Processing as their major subject. So, their booth was filled with the processed food that they were able to produce in the past week. They sold it to students and teachers and they received overwhelming support, especially from the teachers of TNTS.
Aside from the food display, they also offered to teach sign language to everyone who visited their booth. Many students came and interacted with our facilitators. But we were very happy when our school principal and the heads of different departments in our school visited our booth and learned sign language.
Overall, our Club Day was indeed very successful. The Talking Hands Club was able to generate income from their food display and everyone had so much fun! :)
Featuring Wilfredo, the Artist
Aside from Myke and Mark, I would also like to highlight one of my students who is also deaf and mute and who has an amazing talent in sketching. He is not one of our scholars but he is a friend of Myke and Mark. His name is Wilfredo.
Last year, he was under my advisory and I was very lucky to be sketched by him for free. I believe he can do so much more with his talent, so together with our School Activities Coordinator, we went to the city hall of Tagum last year and presented a proposal to our mayor.
The proposal was all about generating funds for the deaf and mute students of our school, and the biggest portion of the raised funds will go to Wilfredo. The generated money was in exchange for portrait sketches of all the officials of our beloved city, which of course was drawn by our talented student, Wilfredo.
Here are some of his work samples. If you would like to take advantage of his talent, just leave a comment below or message me on Discord and we can discuss the payment mode and other details. I'm pretty sure Wilfredo will be so happy to offer you his service. :)
We were able to raise quite a good amount of money at the time. There was even a government official who is now in the National office who gave 1,000 pesos or 20usd each to the nine deaf and mute pioneering students of TNTS. Indeed, there are so many people with a kind and generous heart, here and outside Steemit!
