On the horizon, we saw a wooden fence, the holes reinforced with chicken-wire and mud-bricks and adobe plastered on higgledy-piggledy, about two metres high. Inside the fence was a short open-air tower, barely higher than the fence.
The tower seemed to be unoccupied, so we walked up closer. It was a Flingellan outpost, probably the same group who had attacked us before, but we needed food – and they wouldn't expect us to still be alive, anyway.
We got close to the fence, and found a crack to peer through. Inside, there was a stable with a few pigs, as well as a lawn bowls green. If we could just poach one of those pigs (or fry it), we wouldn't need be subjected to the Palo-Alto-lithic diet after all.
Hanging above the bowling green was a portrait of Queen Califia, the Flingellan monarch, riding a Griffin. Yes, it was certainly a Flingellan outpost.
This is a five-minute freewrite based on the prompt California. Queen Califia was the ruler of the mythical Island of California.

In other news, I have just started a choose-your-own adventure where the character's actions are chosen by you, the readers and commenters. If you think this is an interesting idea, please check it out at A Computer-based Interactive Fiction For You and Your Friends.
The plot thickens!
