Last night I went to a dinner party at my friends' @ELAmental & @Hempress place, and was so happy to spend time with my brother @Alchemage, introduce @TheLynx to some of the Steemit crowd, and get to know @RichardCrill & @LindseyLambz better :-)
One of the things that came up was the Freedom Friday project, started by @EagleSpirit, and now operating in collaboration with @FreedomTribe. Now, I'm not actually part of @FreedomTribe, but I support what they're about both in principle and through the @TribeSteemUp project (and lots of TSU members are in Freedom Tribe as well), and I have really been enjoying getting writing prompts from various communities & sources to keep my brain moving in different ways. This week's prompt for #FreedomFriday is:
As you've probably noticed by now, I often start off topics like this by giving the actual dictionary definitions of the word(s) being discussed, then moving from there to my own thoughts. In this particular case I won't be doing that, in part because I'm sure a lot of folks answering will be, and in part because I really don't find most dictionaries' take on the word to be anywhere near good enough.
I generally define freedom as a 2-part idea: internal & external, or "inner freedom" & "freedom from _____". I have begun to do this for a variety of reasons, most notably because each of us clearly has absolute control over one of these, while the other is a bit harder for someone to own unless they've already walked the path of the first.
Freedom from violation
The idea of freedom that the average human is generally more aware of or familiar with is that of freedom from external violation. In American culture & mythology, humans have had it ingrained into them that they have certain "freedoms", protected by a 350 year-old piece of paper, written by slave-owners. Most folks in the Euro-American world would say that they have a pretty high amount / wide range of this kind of freedom, though it is factually untrue.
Can you do ANYTHING you want as long as it doesn't harm another? Think about how many codes, ordinances, and laws exist in most countries, specifically telling humans what they can and can't do, even if nobody else is affected by their actions in any way.
If you can't offer a service (like, say, doing someone's hair) without paying for "permission", then you're being violated.
If any amount of the income you earn by agreeing to exchange time for money with some other human or company is taken from you without your consent (taxes), under the threat of violence, then you're being violated.
If you can be rolling down the street and some guy in a funny uniform turns on flashing lights, tells you to pull over, and is then allowed to give you extortion slips and kidnap or kill you if you argue with him, you're being violated.
The simple fact is that the state, those corporations that are referred to as "governments" are simply large-scale organized crime syndicates, in the business of violating as many humans as they possibly can. One of their most common tools is to cast spells over the minds of the masses through things like the illusion of authority (the idea that someone else is morally above you) and the use of euphemisms ("arresting" is simply kidnapping, "war" is simply mass murder, and "taxes" are just theft), and hammering home those spells through 13-year forced indoctrination camps ("school").
Side note: a little poem I wrote
War is Genocide
a Ticket is Extortion
and Arresting someone is just Kidnapping them
Euphemisms do not change actions
Control over another cannot bring satisfaction
This system has existed for thousands of years
Now I've got a message for each of your ears
That paradigm is over, its time is done
We simply have to realize, we've already won
By taking responsibility for all of our actions
We withdraw support of the parasitic faction
In the new age of love and cooperation
We create systems based on decentralization
My life is truly blessed, it needs no exaggeration
All that is supports us when we work for liberation
So go forth and shine your light each day
and be sure to find some time to pray
It isn't just about dogma and religion
but being thankful for all that's in your vision
You are a creator, you are one with Source
Everything you could want, it's already yours
Unlearn your conditioning and integrate your trauma
and life will cease to be a constant flow of drama
If you just change yourself, you've already changed the world
Step into your truth, and let your potential unfurl
I'm going to keep being me, it's the only thing to do
and I'm so thankful for each and every one of you
You are beautiful
You are powerful
You are free
and I love you!
Internal Freedom... AKA Total Responsibility
The more foundational part of freedom, the part that is absolutely necessary to actually make head-way in the realm of freedom from violation, could also be called total responsibility for self. I am the creator of my experience; I am responsible for my actions, my thoughts, my words, the situations I find myself in, how I react to those situations, and ultimately the whole of my experience.
When something comes up in my life, I have the option of being grateful for it, whatever it is, and finding the lessons and opportunities for growth & joy in it, or seeing it as a negative. The way in which I handle these things, especially the long-term patterns around this, decide whether my life is one of joy & freedom, or one of limitation and feeling like a victim. Are you acting as though life happens to you, or as though you are the one making the decisions?
The only reason that statism, this planet-wide disease of violence & coercion, is able to exist is because SO many humans choose to out-source responsibility for their lives to others instead of owning it themselves. When you see an issue in the world that you want addressed, you can either choose to change how you are living to help resolve that issue, or you can "vote" for the state to steal more money and use violence & coercion against others to resolve that issue (little tip: they rarely ever do anything about the actual issue, but they're happy for the excuse to commit more violence).
Just think how laughable it would be for a thousand or two old windbags to try controlling 7 billion humans if those billions didn't for some reason believe that they needed to be controlled, or that it is even divine will that they be controlled. How many folks would show up for their jobs in the military or police if they actually had to bear the moral burden of the wrongs they commit instead of passing the buck and saying that they're "just following orders"...
The ancient practice of Ho’oponopono takes this idea of responsibility for everything around us and uses it as the basis for powerful healing & forgiveness. If you're not familiar with the concept, do a quick search for the term, and read the story of Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len.

WooHoo we have The Kenny in the house!! Thank you for this magnificent post brother, you are speakin my languange and what a lovely group of people you get to dine with. I’m almost jelly. Many many if your words are what I speak on the daily, tis why we are here right? To help others be free, many times just getting caught up with the system in their own minds. So happy to see your participation and I just loved it. Powerful and fruitful for all to hear, read, see, live and apply it. Not sure I can say any more than what you stated above but I’ll certainly try. We all must unite and express what is, what was, and what is coming.
A’oo,
Eagle Spirit
Thanks @eaglespirit! It was a little bit of a cheat to jump on this writing prompt since it's probably the thing that I write/speak about most anyway, but it felt good to wake up and flow this piece out :-)
Thanks for the work that you're doing, and I look forward to collaborating more in the future!
remembering that has been key for being a part of what we will experience. it will be truly amazing. i’m still putting the pieces together regarding the hopi (my ndn tribe) prophecy and our past history.yes, most definitely @flawly was just inspiring me to attend archapulco as well as @elemental. flaw gave me more an insight as to the feelings and experience as far as “starseed reunion” type of feel and i would be blessed to attend and be amongst my kin... must be time for all of us to meet and come together. being “alone” for the majority of my life has definitely been hard but an education. it’s the
a’oo,

Anarchapulco is a good one (though I have concerns about this year based on the first announced speakers and some other things), but if you really want to find the largest scale collection of the tribe, there's nothing better than The Rainbow Gathering. (Less steemians per capita because tech is much less present)
okay well if you have those feelings then i trust that, i'd love to know where and when the Rainbow Gathering is ... but then again I can just Google it I suppose :)

Financial freedom is definitely an important part of a free life.
Thanks for the perspective. Freedom is the ability to use your resources how you like.

I would say that's one piece of it for sure, but not nearly all of it.
I would say that's one
Piece of it for sure, but not
Nearly all of it.

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.
Well said man. 👍
Thanks :-)
I like your poem!
Thank you; it felt so wonderful to write!
Despite having written on freedom many times before, glad you wrote under #freedomfriday... loved what you said about us believing we needed to be controlled by windbags... I have always resented that myself. Big up real freedom... it starts internally and spreads out...💚

I'm really enjoying diving into these various writing prompts; even when it is a topic that I've covered before, it's always nice to revisit, as my own innerstanding & ability to communicate is ever-evolving.
Sending love!
I am constantly amazed at the eloquent way that you write your posts and writing some of the things I would like to post myself. I dont agree with all your opinions and references but as I am much older I know that some world leaders have had their past white-washed. Having wrote that and looking at the dirty political washing being done in public perhaps I should have included all world leaders and politicians.
George Orwell in his parody of human relationships, Animal Farm, wrote “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.” There will always be people that strive to be leaders. and others who will have leadership thrust upon them. (insert your favourite cliché here)
Its within the human being to be corrupted by power, and once tasted more power is wanted.
Unfortunately we must have rules and regulations, but often the makers of those rules become ambitious and a 'nanny state' emerges slowly and surely strangling the freedom of others. This is fairly typical of communist states and 'new left' organisations.
Wow, thanks. I really appreciate that, it's especially nice to hear that others are pondering the same topics, makes it feel like i'm definitely doing what i'm supposed to be doing :-)
Any time someone says "always" with regards to human behavior, I have to disagree to some extent right off the bat, as the only thing humans always do is adapt. Everything that is referred to as "human nature" is actually just results of the society/environment is being adapted to.
The only way for rules to ever actually serve their desired purpose is for them to be voluntary, non-punitive, and apply equally to everyone who has agreed to them, versus the current model of a small group creating a rule, forcing others to obey it, and conveniently being immune to it themselves. Every form of statism operates in this same way.
You remind me of George Orwell AKA Eric Arthur Blair who went through many phases before realising that governments must exist to protect people from crime and injustice. He actually wrote in his book 'The Road to Wigan Pier', "I worked out an anarchistic theory that all government is evil, that the punishment always does more harm than the crime and the people can be trusted to behave decently if you will only let them alone." You have said that if you remember.
I was never a fan of Orwell, and personally believe that (whether intentionally or not) his book 1984 is part of the reason that the world is in the state that it is now.
Make up a story, make it seem possible from where we are now, then get MILLIONS of people to think those exact same thoughts, to visualize that same possible world... Guess what happens? It is manifested into reality.
There are plenty of ways to protect people and find justice that do not require theft, coercion, violence, and hierarchy (the most important one being healthy, nonviolent childhoods)
It may be required reading for the trainee dictator. Its amazing how many writers predicted (influenced?) the future. Chesley Bonestell managed to produce his idea of what the planets look like with astounding accuracy even before Sputnik was launched.
So very true. I remember reading some of Robert Heinlein's early work (30s & 40s) and being blown away by how accurately he described the functionality & appearance of the rockets that came 3 decades later.
Hi Kenny, hope you can forgive me to kidnap your positive post to find some open door to get a temporary job. But if it really bothers you let me a comment above and I will edit it, so that this comment will be empty. Sorry.

This was clearly right up your alley. Having feedom from violation and taking total responsibility for creating your experience are the way to create true freedom! I had heard of Ho'oponopono, but not of Hew Len. He really explains the TOTAL responsibility part well! Really glad to find that! And that poem was fire! Thank you!
It certainly was; so happy you showed me your entry :-)
Thank you for your words brother, and for everything you do in the world! Looking forward to connecting more in the future.
Upvoted and resteemed :)
You have a good effort going and you guys are all doing good work!
Thanks, @truthforce
Thank you!
I loved reading this. Yes! to personal responsibility as the key to inner-freedom.
Thank you :-) Always glad to hear something like that!
