Perjalanan karir sepakabola Callum Wilson memang termasuk luar biasa. Lima tahun lalu dia masih bermain di kompetisi level kedua dan ketiga di kancah persepakbolaan Inggris. Ketika Wilson diikat kontrak klub AFC Bournemouth pada awal musim 2014/2015, klub yang berlokasi di bagian baray daya Inggris ini masih bermain di Division Championship. Kompetisi kasta kedua dalam hirarki sepak bola Negeri Ratu Elizabeth.
Kontribusi Wilson di klub barunya cukup signifikan. Pemain yang juga memiliki kewarganegaraan Republik Irlandia ini mampu menyumbang 20 gol. Dengan gol-golnya itu pemain berusia 26 tahun ini menghantarkan The Cherries promosi ke Premier League. Liga paling glamour saat ini.
Sempat mengalami cedera lutut yang serius sejak pertengahan musim lalu, dia kembali bangkit di musim 2018/2019. Masih dengan Bournemouth, Wilson sudah mengantongi enam gol Premier League.
Buah kerja keras dan ketekunan akhirnya mimpi setiap pemain datang juga. Dia dipanggil untuk memperkuat tim nasional Inggris.Gareth Southgate, manajer Three Lions saat ini memasukkan nama Wilson dalam skuadnya untuk menghadapi pertandingan persahabatan melawan USA dan **Kroasia dalam laga lanjutan UEFA Nations League , Liga A Grup 4.
Wilson membayar kepercayaan san pelatih dengan langsung mencetak gol di laga debutnya bersama tim nasional Inggris. Golnya di menit ke-77 menutup kemenangan 3-0 anak asuh Southgate atas Sam Army. Sebuah umpan silang yang dikirim Fabian Delph dari garis kanan pertahanan Amerika Serikat, dengan manis disentuh Wilson dengan sisi luar kaki kanannya. Sontekan cerdik oemain berkulit gelap tersebut tak kuasa dibendung Brad Guzan, kiper yang lama mengawal gawang Aston Villa di Liga Inggris.
Southgate pun berbangga dengan dedikasi yang ditunjukkan oleh pemain pilihannya itu. Dia sekarang memiliki pilhan tambahan untuk posisi penyerang tengah yang selama ini selalu dihuni Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy, dan pemain gaek Jermain Defoe.
Laga friendly ini sendiri juga sebagai pertandingan seremoni bagi Wayne Rooney, pertanda laga perpisahannya bersama tim nasional Inggris.
Dalam pertandingan ini, Southgate dengan berani menurunkan line up yang berisi sejumlah pemain muda. Delp merupakan yang tertua sehingga pantas diberi ban kapten di lengannya sejak awal laga, sebelum masuknya Rooney di menit ke-58 menggantikan Jesse Lingard.

- Debut, Callum Wilson ternyata sekaligus menjadi pemain AFC Bournemouth pertama dalam sejarah yang mendapa caps bersama tim nasional Inggris senior.
- Selain Wilson, ada Lewis Dunk yang juga mencatat debut di laga ini. Dan dia menjadi pemain Brighton & Hove Albion pertama yang bermain untuk Inggris senior sejak Steve Foster tampil melawan Kuwait di Piala Dunia 1982.

- Talenta muda Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund) menjadi pemain outfield pertama yang merumput di luar Inggris yang berkostum Tiga Singa sejak David Beckham (LA Galaxy) melakukannya pada laga versus Belanda pada Agustus 2009.
Source Sancho dan Pulisic duo Dortmund harus menjadi lawan pada laga ini.
