5 Hidden Gems: Horror Films You Shouldn't Miss

I love a good horror film.

The House of the Devil.jpg
The House of the Devil is a wonderful love letter to classic 1980’s horror. Penned and directed by the prolific Ti West, it doesn’t disappoint in it’s dedication to visiting familiar lands of the old school genre. College student Samantha Hughes is desperate for money to pay the first months rent on her new home. What starts as a seemingly harmless and profitable babysitting job, dives deep into the strange and violent pit of the devils’ home.

We Are Still Here.jpg
We Are All Still Here comes from the producers of The House of the Devil and writer, director Ted Geoghegan. Another well crafted period piece that heads back four decades to the retro horrorland of the 1970’s. A grieving couple looks to heal their wounds in a new home. Their recovery relapses into horror when the house wakes up after 30 years and demands sacrifice.

The Void.jpg
The Void pulls you in with its dark tone and vivid atmosphere. A nightmare fueled, ride of terror, brought to you by the minds of Gerry Gillespie and Steven Kostanski. This Canadian Horror film walks the line between body horror and existential horror. I’d like to tell you more but I think this movie holds true to, “the less you know, the better”.

It Comes At Night.jpg
It Comes at Night explores the human psyche in the realms of paranoid fear and distrust. This film follows the struggle of a family surviving in a world that is victimized by a mysterious viral threat. Their strictly regimented life is tested and turned on its head when a desperate family man seeks their help. The visuals, strong acting, powerful sound and ambiguous storytelling create an intense experience for any audience.

StillBorn.jpg
Still/Born starts as a visceral experience and doesn’t let up. A young mother gives birth to twins but one dies in childbirth. It’s hard not to empathize with the mother as she desperately tries to protect her newborn from an evil entity. An entity she believes has targeted her children. This film keeps your hands sweaty and your heart rate up but I would not recommended it for new parents.
