SWEET YELLOW CORN

Who ate my corn? Nothing is secure in this country anymore. How can I go for a short nap only to wake up to see that a rat has the guts, the temerity and the effrontery to break into my barn, take up my sweet yellow corn and start munching on it?
I had made plans to slowly masticate and enjoy the feel of this corn in my mouth tonight but right now I am heartbroken. This is not fair. I demand justice on the culprit!

There are many heaps of white corn in this house but the thief left those ones and chose to munch on this single delicacy of mine. I am so saddened right now and I can’t imagine this is happening to me. This is a heinous crime that must be punished. The perpetrator of this mischief must face the wrath of the law.

I am just wondering who the culprit could be. The house has not been forcefully broken into. Whosoever gnawed on this corn is not an outsider but an insider. This is an inside job. The thief must have been monitoring my movements and activities to sneak in when I fell asleep.

Could the culprit be Cheeky-cheeky my cousin? He visited me yesterday and gave me compliments on this corn. He said he loves the colour and can only imagine how sweet the corn would taste. But Cheeky-cheeky does not have the key to this house. It can’t be him.

Could it be Chum-chum my sister? She has a taste for sweet yellow corn. But Chum-chum traveled to the house of the-fat-rich-man yesterday. She informed me that she was going there to feast on the sacks of garri in that house. She couldn’t have come back so early, and she isn’t a thief. My sister can’t sneak into my house to steal my food even though she has a spare key.

Justice has to prevail but where and whom do I report to? The Rat Police would demand a bribe from me before they can attend to my case. They would even ask me to allow them to gnaw on some seeds on this cob as compensation. They might even take the whole cob and chase me away. I just don’t trust them.

I must catch the thief redhanded. I have a plan. I would put this cob back in the barn. The thief would surely come back to continue feasting on it. I would hide behind the door with my weapon. I would jump on the intruder with anger and ferocity. It would not escape. I will kill the creature!

I love this sweet yellow corn more than anything else in the world. But before I return it to the barn, let me have a taste…Uhmmm…Yummy!
