Education- It's Meaning Needs To Be Re-framed

in #education6 years ago (edited)

Education is a very important part of our life. All humans need quality education to live a life of their dreams. A beautiful, successful life can be lived if you are educated and able to develop logic. In our society, the meaning of education is limited to schooling, graduation, post-graduation. Every student is supposed to perform in all subjects irrespective of his/her interests or his/her field of expertise. In school, if a student performs good in a subject like history(say) but is unable to solve mathematics questions, then he/she is considered as an average student.

A huge pressure from family is created to perform well in all subjects. The student who can not perform well feels burdened. All his capabilities other than academics are ignored and he is taught that academics is everything and without scoring well he can not achieve anything in life. But is this true?

If this is the truth then how come sportsmen gain this much of fame? How these actors and comedians earn so much wealth and respect? Ronaldo became one of the best football player by studying mathematics or Sachin became God of Cricket by studying science? Priyanka Chopra got to perform in Hollywood by because she was a brilliant student ?

The only answer to all these questions is NO. Sachin and Ronaldo are famous because of their game and not because they studied science and mathematics. Priyanka Chopra is known worldwide for her acting skills and not for her academic results.

Expecting every student to perform in same subjects is very unfair. They should be given a chance to explore the field in which they can give their best. Its high time that we should think about changing Indian Education System. If our government can't think of a better idea then it should follow countries like South Korea, Japan, Singapore where students can explore. Education should be a path which teaches the way of living and not a burden on pupils.

After all education is just a drop of water from the ocean of knowledge. But it covers most of our childhood years. A student spends 12 to 14 years of his life in a school but still many students fail in life. This does not prove that we do not need schools but it proves that their are many loopholes in this system.

How is it possible that you spend 12 years on improving yourself and learning something but you still fail in life. 12 years is a long time to build skills and achieve something. If these 12 years of school life can be changed then their will be no need of these high paying degrees and graduation courses. A child will be exposed to such an environment where he can experiment and work in different fields and then he can realize and find out his/her field of expertise. This type of structure will prove more productive.

i totally agree with you and its such a shame that the nature of the education system we face not just in india but also in nigeria and so many part of the world, kills the dream of most people as well as limit the potentials of the people who go through it, many of us who dont quickly identify with ourselves that this system is failing end up living miserable and only with regrets years later after going through this process and realise it was jsut a waste of years.
Funny how we all get graduated from the university and start thinking of what to do in life or where to begin, most end up working in firms or doing jobs not because they want or love it but just to pay bills and after retirement they regret their dreams not achieved.

I imagine a world where everyone is accepted and appreciated for what he is naturally and what he wants to be, without regards to what his/her parents desires of him or what the society expects and not because of the idea of high pay jobs or just to pay bills.
He or she would do well and excel in her field and as well enjoy every moment of anything he or she finds himself doing.
Just as the example you gave, the society may classify ronaldo an illiterate or a drop out having not graduate through the university, however ronaldo started his career as early as his 8 years of age and ever since then he fully developed himself in that line of field and became great and successful, lol imagine ronaldo ended up being a lecturer, hahahhahaha, no one would have displayed those skills and tactics and a legend such as him would have never been heard of, well that's education as education is a learning process which necessarily not need be tied to school.
imagine we all pursue our dreams at early ages we all would be like Ronaldo in our diverse feed and career.
Thanks for the post dear and i pray the world realizes its hightime they dump the current education system in the thrash and upgrade.

Your world of imagination is an ideal world

hope we build it for our generation

a thought provoken article.
problem are in our political structure and decision maker they dont want change.

education system in sub continent countries are very worst they just give degree.

education system should be simple and creative.
if u see a list of billionarie most of them are not educated not proper degree.

I enjoyed your article very much so. However, upon review I think you may be missing the bigger picture. While education in our world today has improved greatly, I am sure you can understand the burden that one should place on themselves. A burden of personal responsibility.
School is a guiding path into, what should be more promoted, self education. But in order to create a sense of logic you must first create a basis in which your logical ideas are derived from.
This of course includes history, math, science, and as many other studies as possible. The bigger your collective, the more well chossen your choices in life will be.
Every subject intertwines with the other in varing degrees based in the nature of study. Science to math, math to English, English to history. It is unlikley to be successful in one fundamental without the others.
People of all ages do have the ability to study at will. Our schooling system has always been intended to keep a well informed public. Leave self study for your off hours as a child and pick your major for college carefully.
The fundamental learning of every study is extremly important. Learning is not always the easiest, but it is the most necessary to finding success from any point of view.

I want to add before I end this reply. You stated the wealthy as successful. I do not think he who dies with the most toys wins. I have always been a humanitarian by choice. I think you should reevaluate if what you claim to be success is in fact such. Then when you write your next article, give us your terms of success in detail. I would much like to know your views instead of having to interpret them.

Thanks for the read,

I have already mentioned that schools are important but their are loopholes in our education system. If you visit India you will see that a child get up at 5 am then rush to the school and then comes back home at 2 pm or 3 pm. Their is so much pollution in Delhi that a child travelling by bus becomes very tired and in many cases suffer from headache that he is unable to do anything after coming back home. He needs a rest of upto 1 or 2 hours then rushes to his tutors for studying again. Now the question arises that after spending 6 to 7 hours in school why these tutors are required? It means either the teachers at school are not capable to teach in a proper way or the student was unable to grab what was taught. That teaching of 6 to 7 hours should be very effective so that instead of running to the tutors the child can spend some time in grooming his/her practical skills or can play for sometime so that his/her physical fitness becomes excellent. Rushing to school then coming back home and then going to tutions and the coming back home to do homework is too much. Moreover, I have seen many schools. Teachers their are not doing their duties properly. In MCD(Municipal Corporation of Delhi) Schools teachers write answers on the blackboard during exams or while checking answer sheets they even write answers in them so that most of the students pass that exam and the effective result of the teacher does not downgrade. This is the bigger picture of Delhi. I don't know about whole world but I know about the place where I live. And I have not stated success and wealth are same but to live a life you need money, you need money to buy food and clothes. And if you are best in doing something then you should go for it. After sometime, you will gain wealth to live your life and you will be happy because you are doing the work that you loves to do. That happiness is real success and I will try to write an article on the success as well. Thanks for reviewing. My aim to write on steemit is not to just get upvotes and earn money but i love to get criticized and my work needs review. These reviews from people of different minds and different places can make be better in this work. So, thanks once again. This review was very helpful to me.

I couldn't agree more that there are many downfalls in most of the education systems. However, would it not be most important in understanding the place of a public education system. (Which I think should focus on teaching a person the basics in education and how to learn rather than what to learn. So in a way we do agree.)
I think the key factor, in which you have stated in several ways, would be the responsiblity of the individual to find what they are good at.
I am nearing on 30 and I can tell you that I have learned more applicable things out of school than in and I have never been content with what I want to do with my life.
I feel that a child's success at school does not start at school... It starts at home... I believe that the stronger the family, the stronger the child. And many statistics can prove a strong home to be a successful home. However, some children such as myself we're not so lucky in having a family. All I had was a public education to depend on.
I think our school systems would be much more beneficial if the point of life were implemented into their study's. That fundamental skill would be survival. You mentioned money is required to live but it is not. That is the consumer way of living by far. Rather teach the child the importance of skill in survival. Teach them how to make their own clothes, how to grow crops, how to hunt, how to barter.
Why is it that our children find it easy to explain the process of photosynthesis but have never grown their own food. They can explain the organs of a cow after anatomy physiology, but they have never been to a farm.
I mentioned of you dipicting success in the form of wealth, based in your examples and that is why I hoped you would itterate in what you found success to be. I do look forward to that article.
I find it important to build onto what we have and many of your concerns in the education system seem to be beyond reasonable as far as I can tell. Many concerns in which I share.
Your article came across as though you were stating that certain key learnings are not important if the child sees them as not being so. For that I wrote my comment. If I misinterpreted I do apologize. Thanks for replying back. I'll follow you to keep eyes out for that article of success.

I'm not in favor of hunting and a child living ina slum area it is hard to get a personal room then how is he going to get a place to grow crops and somehow if he manages to get that land then there are many things which can't be grown on land. Also there are climate and seasonal issues. There are a lot of factors which affect these things. Making clothes, he will have to start from making fibre to fabric how is it possible in todays lifestyle. Earlier all these things were reasonable but now times have changed.

And sir there is no need to apologise for anything I'm actually thankful to you for reading and analysing my article. You are elder to me and by giving your viewpoint you are actually helping me in broadening my thought process.

thats correct the is a biased education system working in india... it starts right from the school level when we have to choose our streams... an avg science student is considered better than by a brillient arts or commerce student by our honorable teachers... adding to all of this some times the parents who are ignorant of the current carrier opportunities in the world simply put pressure on their ward to perform well in all the subjects and get qualified for traditional fields like Engineering Doctorate etc... this is really unfair as it kills the inner capabilities and specialities of a child..
surprizingly our great government is also not taking any initiative towards these problems because it has nothing to do with the vote bank of their respective parties...

Yes you are right education is very important but u cant ignore developing self grooming and self confidence ...i have seen many people who knows everyrhing but cant speak

Yes it needs to be changed...Students creativity should come out ..But the education system of india is not giving such any opportunity ...It teaches only one thing get good marks ,get into good college and get a good job and it over ..No one is getting educated on reality ..It's only to get good marks and good job...Great article

Agreed. Before of child birth parents will say "My child become a doctor/engineer".

Yes education is very much important in once life. But now a days school are not a teaching institutes, it became a many making institute. They charge whole lot of money that middle class people want effort to pay for they child.

Our government should play a part here and centralized the fee structures of the private schools.

Well said.. nice article.. indian education need to be change..

@himanitokas Education is necessary but the good are not represent the excellence level of anyone. The education system of India is not so good

@himanitokas Nice article my friend. Good to know about your thoughts.

Education is important and essential for all persons. I'm engaged with a NGO called don't worry be happy which provide free education for poor child specially girls. It's run by teachers who provide education's as well as earn money appotunity.

beautifully said... Just not study is important. If you we are well studied but then to lack of knowledge and skills its not worth it...

Completely agreed! Our education system, though strong is working on obsolete principles. Like a famous quote said - You can't judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree - can you?
