I think I'll try making some in my homemade fire pit. Doubt a burn pile is allowed in town, and summer is a great time for a fire in the back yard.

It should work! You might look into info for making it in a fire pit... if it has steep walls you can look for instructions to make biochar in a cone kiln and it would be the same process. As up layer feed stock up and it starts burning, it cuts off oxygen to the char below, so it doesn't turn to ash.
