Design system - a new buzzword on the Design block. It's being used more and more in last two years and is rising in popularity.In last 6 months many companies jumped on the bandwagon as well, starting to add functionality or offering that somehow deals with the Design systems. From InVision, UXpin, Marvel, even Sketch.

What is it?
To keep it simple, it's a set of repeatable components and guidelines that shape the way different teams across organization design seamless experiences and familiar experience across products. The best example of that is Attlasian products I'd say. Now wherever you go the experience and visual feel of all their products is very familiar.
So to keep it even simpler, Design Systems is a combination o pattern libraries, style guides and guidelines on the structure and overall experience.
As I am no expert on Design systems I'll let the experts speak.
