An alternate revenue stream for premium content
Context
Traditional media and content creators’ current model for digital content is failing. Revenue is dropping with no end in sight. The cause is threefold: the decline in value of online advertising, the rise of ad blockers, and finally the shift of control over content and advertising power to social media giants such as Facebook.
Past year, Facebook reported 59% year-to-year increase in its advertising revenue . In the same timeframe, the advertising revenue for traditional media dropped 6% . Data showed that alongside a 50% drop in print revenue between 2000 and 2010 , newspaper jobs in the US went down from nearly 458,000 in 1990 to about 183,000 in 2016.
Digital revenue barely slows the ever-increasing loss of income for traditional media. The traditional advertising model has reached its limit. Tired from loss of data privacy, finding too many ads annoying or irrelevant, 36% of internet users are now using desktop ad-blockers .
Although fake news is not a recent problem, social networks provide their distributors with a way to increase their reach. Not only social networks make it easy to share fake news, reinforce biases, and prevent debates by silo-ing audiences, they force content creators to comply with their distribution rules making it increasingly challenging for them to monetize quality content.
As a result, fake news have become more profitable than real investigative journalism and are used in social debates, leading to major political shifts and a general distrust of the traditional press.
“We believe that democratic societies need a strong press and legitimate content providers that help share quality articles and investigations with citizens in order to foster healthy debate and social changes. A sustainable revenue for content creator is key. A new paradigm must emerge.”
Vision
Imagine an alternative to the traditional digital advertising model, free of invasive ads and privacy concerns. A sustainable model for both the press and content creators. Thanks to the token economy and web 3.0, a unique and innovative approach is now taking shape: Contentera.
Why Contentera?
Contentera organizes articles around topics and communities and presents varied content from opposing viewpoints and different sources. Via a reward system, the more time the consumer spends reading an article, the more revenue it generates for its publisher(s) and author(s). Contentera is not a social network, it does not require a user to register and create a profile, there is no data retention, no comments to moderate. Governments, social networks or digital marketplaces shouldn’t be allowed to access what a citizen has read, their location or web history.
Contentera generates revenue based on partnerships with companies active within the blockchain economy. These new actors are not only active in the finance industry but in every other aspect of the economy. They monetize their services in domains such as distributed computing, medical imagery, 3D rendering engines for games and movies, and cloud solutions.
Contentera’s unique approach will benefit consumers, content creators and new companies who develop services using blockchain technology.
Blockchain Companies
These innovative companies flourishing on the blockchain economy propose alternatives to existing cloud service and infrastructure companies. In order for them to turn a profit, these companies require a large infrastructure to scale their business. Contentera gathers the small contributions of willing participants in a network that supports these businesses. In return, these businesses pay Contentera for the use of the participant-based secure infrastructure.
Publishers and website owners have become interested in the cryptocurrency economy. However, their approach consists of stealing resources from consumers without their consent or knowledge, with no regards to the security breaches related to the consumer’s private data using scripts that run into the web browser.
On the contrary, Contentera aims to build a sustainable relationship between consumers and those new actors. We aim to bring awareness and make sure consumers know they participate in a network that helps with the deployment of decentralized applications or the solving of computation intensive tasks. As a result, we allow those companies to accelerate their infrastructure growth and/or foster their innovative solutions.
Consumers
Consumers are increasingly conscious of the fact that content producers such as the press should have a profitable online revenue model in order to continue play its role as a pillar of democracy. Still, it is a rare thing for a consumer to pay for multiple subscriptions when they can often get the information they seek through free content.
Contentera’s unique approach is to allow consumers to rent out their desktop computational power and unused storage securely. They can choose which projects to support and control the level of contribution to the Contentera network. This allows them to pay for the content they consume without having to use a credit card.
Journalists, Publishers & Creators
Content creators should be able to express themselves safely. They can shield their content from external pressure on the Contentera network. They can leverage crowdfunding to write in depth investigative journalism pieces.
Contentera takes care of the platform and it’s monetization via partnerships. The platform enables content creators to focus on their core business. The monetization process is transparent and revenue is based on reading time.
THE SOLUTION
Contentera is, at its core, a content aggregator. In other words, an application that groups content from many sources of information and organizes articles, podcasts, audio and video content around topics and similar interest groups.
These tokens are used to pay the content creators and publishers based on the time spent consuming the content (reading the articles, listening to podcast or watching videos). On a weekly basis, Contentera exchanges the tokens earned by the creators and publishers with the money generated by Contentera’s network.
The consumer chooses the project (s)he wants to support and Contentera will run the necessary software securely on the computer, completely isolated with no access to participant’s data.
In return, Contentera rewards the consumer with Cera tokens that can then be spent in exchange for consuming ad free content on a variety of devices, to tip their favourite content creators and to fund articles.
The more the consumers participate, the more tokens they receive, the more they can consume and interact and the more revenue the authors receive.
No fraud, no hidden processes, a transparent revenue stream, only a decision to support a fair and innovative model.

Will contentera have it's own blockchain or use an existing one? Awesome project by the way.
He he ! That's the big news - contentera will start by cloning the steem blockchain ! In time, depending on the timelines, it could get back to the main steem blockchain if the SMTs live up to the expectations
Interesting :)
