Ever wondered how buildings go up?.. that is basically what i help with and it is so fun when I am doing it because who doesn't, want to be a part of making a structure stand?. As a student quantity surveyor, I'm like a construction detective, learning the tricks of the trade on a real building site. It's pretty cool and that is what i can say, my role is never boring. i get to interact with everyone during construction activities.
Mornings are for school, i get to attend classes and keep hitting the books to understand things like costs and materials because those are the most substantial knowledge needed in construction due to our country's economy. This knowledge comes in handy later when I swap my backpack for a construction helmet when i am at the construction site.
The building site is buzzing right now, we're putting up the columns and beams which are among the most important structures of the building and this happens after which we had completed the construction of the foundation. It's like a giant puzzle coming together, piece by piece to form the main structure which is the residential building.
My job as a student quantity surveyor is to team up with the project team on the site that are well endowed with the necessary knowledge and experiences. They taught me how to measure on site in order to cross check what was given in the drawings, make sure we have the right materials, and keep track of how much everything costs and this allows me to compare what we have spent to what was estimated. It's like being a construction accountant, but way more interesting than that.
We're racing against the clock to finish the columns and beams by the end of March. Every day, we meet up to check progress, iron out any problems, and make sure we stay on schedule. everyone is always needed during this time and there is no idle person on site and the only person who should be idle is the client, who s probably just checking what is going on while eating ir drinking.
School and the site keep me busy, but it's awesome. What I learn in class suddenly makes sense when I see it happening for real. Plus, I get to work with experienced people who share their knowledge. This experience is giving my QS career a jumpstart. It's not just about numbers, it's about figuring out problems, adapting to changes, and talking clearly with everyone on the team.
Finishing the building by March is a big goal, but we're a team, and we're all working hard to make it happen. It's more than bricks and mortar, it's about teamwork, planning, and achieving something special. And for me, it's the first step to an amazing career in construction and it will also be the first building i have been engaged with from the inception up to when we will hand over the building to the client and i can not wait to see this very day.
Thanks for reading, i will be updating you all how much progress we are making weekly.
