The Bougainvillea is a kind of shrubs of the Nyctaginaceae family.
The first specimen was discovered by the botanist Philibert Commerson in Brazil during the expedition around the world led by the French explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville. Commerson then pays tribute to Bougainville by naming the genus Buginvillaea, spelling subsequently rectified in Bougainvillea.
