Is Steemit imposing a harsher form of Censorship than YouTube?

Unfortunately, it has come to my attention that yet another Steemian falls foul of unwritten laws of Censorship. Some guy who did a video regarding Genesis Mining was picked up by Steemcleaners.

I remember a while back Craig Grant telling people that he got bad feedback when posting on BitConnect.

Part of the problem, as far as I can see, is the specialist areas of interest are not catered for very well and so we get a stream of posts every second on topics we may or may not be interested in.

Some people seem to be pissing others off by referring to topics like the above as 'Scam' or 'Spam'.

I am interested in both BitConnect and Genesis Mining and what others have to say. Even YouTube doesn't censor these videos or put a strike against the content creator.

People with lots of Steem Power have more ability to flag and downvote content so have more ability to censor others. This can't be a good thing going forward.

Who are these self appointed censors who think they have the right?

Sort:

The only thing I have ever been flagged for was posting my referral link to BitConnect. I wasn't even talking about BitConnect, it was just a link at the bottom of my post. Steemit certainly has censorship issues that could potentially be far worse than what Facebook and YouTube has. All that has to happen is for a government to buy a lot of steem power and go around flagging things they don't like. At least Facebook and YouTube has to be bribed to censor posts so they are sort of the middle man. Steemit just allows anyone with enough money to do it themselves.

Good to know, good point about buying up steempower to flag. I think flagging is ok but maybe shouldn't be steem power dependent.

It's only a matter of time before companies/governments start to join steemit and push their beliefs on people and censor those who don't agree if we keep the current flagging system.

You know when you see posts about something on Facebook (like a political post) and then you get all kinds of negative comments towards the poster because they are wrong. Well on steemit, as long as the poster has enough steem power, they could just flag all the negative comments and censor them all out. Sure they are still visible if someone wants to click to open it, but it's still censorship.

no one appointed SteemCleaner's god.
if they don't like a post just ignore it.
they have to right to do any damn thing for the 'greater good'

Thats what you call 'soft tyranny'.

Censorship is tyranny. Censorship is immoral. Censorship will eventually destroy what they seek to protect. Only the bright light of open free speech will allow things to thrive with time. Take a bite Steemcleaner.

Yep, flagging/downvoting needs to be fixed before this community hits anything close to a critical mass. The ability for anyone with enough investment to censor not only an author but take away the authors' supporters upvotes is very problematic in my opinion. No one should be able to take away what someone else has earned.

Imagine a community forming around a popular and controversial topic like abortion. A respected author who's earned upvotes on their content should not be worried about the other side taking away what they've rightfully earned and others have given.

I can't put my finger on it, but there is definitely something happening. I believe they might be trying to shape the narrative perhaps. I did a post on this also recently.

I feel like they are just protecting us

From what? I guess YouTube and any other censors feel the same way. Do you feel protected? Show me the world, warts and all please.

What if we don't want protection? What if we are able to take our own precautions to protect ourselves and don't want to have someone else do it? I have just about made my investments back from both Genesis Mining and BitConnect. In a few more weeks I'll be getting profits from both companies. If someone had blocked all posts about Genesis Mining and BitConnect before I saw them a few months, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to take the risk with my own money and wouldn't be about to make profits from each.

Me too, $2000 back from $3000 from BitConnect in 10 weeks. Genesis also doing well. Contrary to other people I find returns on Bitcoin the best as the hashrate difficulty has been the most constant. Interested in which contract you think is best as DASH X11 has just come back?

The Genesis Dash miner returns have become pathetic compared to where they once were. The same can be said for the LTC contracts. The return is not nearly as good for the same hash rate on your own machines. What Genesis lists for a hash rate return is significantly exaggerated.

Agreed. Seems bitcoin has consistently given me about 0.09 bitty every day for a month from 31 t/hs. Ethereum returns are also down but i still think they're profitable, just nott as profitable if you take into account the increased difficulty

I like Bitcoin the best because it's open ended but I don't have any Dash x11 contract right now. I did buy some pre-sale of zcash back in november and I might break even after the year, but it will be really close and that's only because it's up in the $400-500 CAD range now. That is a prime example of a risk I took without anyone protecting me. If I lose money, it's my own fault but I'm happy with the fact that I could make that choice on my own without anyone regulating what I can and can't do with my money.

We don't really have a say when we use websites or mass media accounts that are not owned by us . Without us they are nothing , they will soon realize it

Absolutely good point. The only thing is the people "protecting" us don't own steemit either. They are just users like you or me who happen to have more money invested in this and have taken it upon themselves to do what they are doing.

Dear Snowflake, get a spine and become an adult or go hide in you safe space and rot.

When I first joined I got flagged multiple time by @abit and @smooth for this post of a photo I took of the Milky Way https://steemit.com/photography/@azfix/mount-lemon-arizona-milky-way and I have never forgotten that. Everything about the post is original content created by me, but when I joined they were doing a whale experiment and automatically down voted any post that received too much influence from whale votes. It was pretty discouraging considering the time and effort I spent taking these photos. My photos have done well on other social media sites including FB, IG and google plus so it took a while to deal with the reality of steemit. People just have to power through if they create original content that the community enjoys. I never gave up
