Khulna polls: BNP reiterates demand for
reforms to Election Commission
The BNP has reiterated its demand for
reforms to the Election Commission or EC,
claiming it ‘failed’ to conduct the Khulna city
polls fairly.
“The EC is not eligible to hold a free and fair
election. We said again and again that we
want not only the resignation of the chief
election commissioner, but immediate reforms
to the EC,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza
Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He repeated his demand in a meeting of the
party in Dhaka on Thursday.
“How will the Election Commission conduct a
national election as it failed to hold a city
corporation polls properly,” he said.
“Newspapers have reported that the ruling
party men have rigged votes in a new fashion,”
said Fakhrul. “They have deprived people of
their voting right.”
So, the BNP leader said, the Khulna polls
proved that elections would never be fair
under the government.
On Tuesday, Awami League candidate
Talukdar Abdul Khalek won the election by
defeating the BNP-backed candidate Nazrul
Islam Manju.
A day after the polls, Fakhrul dismissed the
election system as ‘farcical’ and demanded
reforms to the EC.
Immediately after polls, the BNP, in its formal
reaction, rejected the outcome of the polls
and demanded the chief election
commissioner’s resignation.
In response, the Awami League brushed aside
the BNP’s allegation of irregularities in the
election.
