Recently, the Boy Scouts ofically changed their name and accepted girls as members.
To me, the admission of girls to the Boys Scouts and the changing of the name of the organization are desperate attempts by the Boys Scouts leaders to stem the loss of membership and limit lawsuits.
From a cultural perspective, the Boys Scouts always had more prestige than the Girls Scouts. We have all heard of becoming an Eagle Scout. When we think of an Eagle Scout we think of some guy.
Girls wanting the prestige petitioned to join the Boys Scouts and won. This was a blow to the Girls Scouts organization because they are also in a drive to keep membership up. The Boys Scouts move to accept girls is a significant blow to their client base.
I think the move to accept girls in the Boys Scouts is a blow to both the Boys Scouts and Girls Scouts.
