Myths The Ethnicity of Aceh

Aceh is the name of a region in Indonesia popularly known as the Special Province of Aceh and is now called Aceh Province. At the time as a kingdom, Aceh is a region, now known as Aceh Besar, which in Aceh language is called Aceh Rayeuk, which in Aceh language is called Aceh Big, which is one of the districts or local level II in Aceh Province. During the kingdom, Aceh Rayeuk (Aceh Besar) as the core of the Aceh Kingdom. Because this area was originally the core of the kingdom and has spread some of its inhabitants to other areas in around which be named by Dutch "Onderhorigheden". The Acehnese term is also used by people in subordinate regions outside Aceh Rayeuk within the Kingdom of Aceh, to name the name of the royal capital now called Banda Aceh. Those who inhabit the Eastern seaboard like Pidie, North Aceh to East Aceh and West and South Coast, if they want to go to the royal capital (Banda Aceh) say they want to go to Aceh and this term is still in use today. In addition, as the name of the Aceh region is also the name of one ethnic or ethnic group as the native inhabitants of Aceh Province.

In Aceh Province, there are now 20 second-level districts occupied by eight ethnic groups, namely Acehnese, Gayo, Alas, Tamiang, Aneuk Jamee, Kluet, Simeulue, and Singkil. All these ethnicities are indigenous people in Dutch terms called inlanders or indigenous people. Regarding when Aceh and when the Aceh term is being used, there is no concrete certainty of its origin. Data or information that can give a conclusion about the origins of Acehnese is not found. Information or sources originating from the Acehnese themselves on this matter are still popular stories submitted through generations (in the form of oral traditions) which are hard to account for. Foreigners who have visited Aceh while still being a kingdom mention with diverse names. The Portuguese for example called the name Achen and Achem, the Englishman called Achin, the French man named Achen and Acheh; the Arabs call Asyi, while the Dutch name Atchin and Acheh. The Acehnese themselves call themselves the Ureung Aceh (Acehnese). Indeed, there are several sources that inform about the origin of Aceh and Acehnese names. But these sources are mystical or fairy tales, although some are also quoted by foreign writers such as Dutch writers.

KF H Van Langen in one of his books about Aceh entitled "De Inrichting Van het Atjehsche Staatbestuur Onder het Sultanaat" (The composition of the Aceh Government during the Sultanate published in BKI 37 (1888) as well as quoted from the Aceh Governor's Report and its Subordinate Territory received as Attachment Letter of Secretary General of Government dated June 30, 1887 No. 956 published in TBG magazine (1889) entitled "Iets Omtrent de Oosprong Van Het Atjesche Volk en den Toestand Onder het Voallegig Sultanaat in Atjeh" (About the Origin of the Nation of Aceh and The state of affairs of the Sultanate of Aceh in Aceh) It is said that according to the folklore, the people of Aceh were called ureueng manteue dominated by the Batak people and also the Gayo ethnic group, which belonged to the large Malay family that originally had not been known for certain. Strengthening this opinion is explained that in Batak and Gayo customs there are still elements and words of also found in Aceh language. Even with the words that have changed along with the elements of the formats of Batak and Gayo languages.

About the origin of Aceh's name is known in a story as follows:

"A Gujarat ship from the Indian Ocean came into a krueng (a river) which then turned into a krueng of Aceh (Aceh River) for trading purposes. shade under a shady tree, praising the beauty of the leaves with the words Aca-Aca which means beautiful.
From these Aca words then the name of this place of changed its name to Aceh.

In addition, some say that ACEH stands for "A" which means Arabic, "C" means Chinese, "E" stands for Europe, and "H" is equal to Indies (India). So, the Acehnese are mixed blood from various nations.

There is blood Arabic, Chinese or Mongolian, European (Portuguese) and Indian . To corroborate this estimate, it is exemplified that the Acehnese in Aceh Besar have many profiles similar to those of Arabs, especially those with titles Sayid or Habib (for men) and Sharifah (for women). In the West Aceh region there are residents who resemble those of Europe (Portuguese) with blue eyes. While in Pidie and Aceh Utara most of the people are Indian or Keling, such as Prof. Dr. Ir. Ibrahim Hasan (former Governor of Aceh) from Pidie.
