I remember when my friend showed me his dads computer and we logged on to the web with Netscape it was going to be big! When I was making websites in middle school, we used a 'banner exchange' to promote our links within a trusted community. You put the code on your ftp hosted html page and when someone else did the same, and a visitor clicked it, there was a chance they could end up on your page. This was the earliest social monetization that I remember. Other banners you could pay a certain amount, via credit card over the phone of course. Primarily that was the only way to make payments 'online'
