In this series I am looking for the most beautiful, arty, smart or interesting beer labels. We all know beers taste great, but quite often we don't pay enough attention to the label design. That's a shame, because a good label can really make the beer experience more complete.
This week we will talk about diving, with Ouwen Duiker by Hedonis.
About the label
Why do I like this label so much? Because it has a nice mixture of the beer tradition and a modern design idea. Also the name is actually really well chosen. Funny yet intelligent.
"Ouwen Duiker" actually has 2 meanings in our local Flemish dialect. If you take it literally, you would have the guy in the picture: a diver in an old diving suit.
But in my area, we also say "Ouwen Duiker" to an older man (about 45 - 65 years old) who you would expect to be in his midlife crisis and being good at... well...basically nothing anymore.
But against all odds, that older guy can still kick your ass in sports, in a game, in a quiz or with life experience in general. That's the sort of guy you would call "Ouwen Duiker" around here.

About the beer
Anyway, this is a beer you would probably notice on the shelf in your favourite beer shop. But is it any good?
I can assure you it really is good. It's your typical blonde Belgian beer with a nice twist which really turns it into a more modern product. It has a combination of sweet tones, bitterness and citrus of the hops and a malty accent as well.
I was actually very surprised by its pleasant complexity when I had it for the first time. And now I buy it every once and a while so I can drink at home.
Good beer to share with friends on one of those good nights with football, games or whatever you like to do when you hang out together. But it also works when you're having a good steak or just to have a beer on your own while relaxing in the garden on a sunny day.
Ratebeer gives this one 91 overall. I would say that is a fair rating for a quality beer. So be sure to try it if you get your hands on a bottle.

Shouldn't be too hard to find. They are from the Ghent area, but I know they are working hard on their branding to get recognition in the rest of the country as well. I saw that they have a stand at the big fair "Jaarbeurs" in Flanders Expo this week along with some other local breweries.
