Just another artist writing about herself : @nikkinicole

in #artist4 years ago

Anyone who is following me (thanks, guys!) knows that I'm writing different artist features every day this week. Me and five other artists got together to spend one day intentionally hyping another artist each day throughout the week, and I've been getting to know each of these amazing people scattered across the globe. Today, my group-mates have decided to throw their spirited support behind me and although it feels bizarre to write about myself as an artist, it felt unfair to not share more of myself with the people I've been prying into the lives of for the last week.

So here I am...

Hello everyone! I'm @nikkinicole and it's lovely to meet you.

Many years ago, I went to a vocational art school where I won a few contests and scholarships for my poorly done, angsty teen art. Then I picked up and moved to NYC as an over-confident, 18 year old and I found myself experiencing the world in a way I never had in my small hometown. After a year of hearing languages I'd never heard, eating food I'd never seen, and making friends with people who were nothing like the people I had previously known, I went through a flurry of creating and shilling my art to community galleries and bars-turned-art-spaces (trust me, doing it online is much easier). It was fun, but it all came to an end when I had a kid [on purpose]. For those of you who haven't birthed another human, it kind of drains you of your life force (especially if you live in a region/culture where neither family nor government support is really a thing).

So here I am with my 5 year old and my brain is finally coming back to life, which isn't the best timing considering I start med school next month as a 30-something "non-traditional" (read: old as f--k) student. 😫

So how did I end up hawking NFTs?

Someone told me about NFTs last summer and I said something along the lines of "digital art isn't worth anything," in the most condescending way possible (because if you're going to say something ignorant you better go all in). A few minutes later, in the spirit of learning something new, I logged into SuperRare and started scrolling. For hours. To make a long story very short, I was completely blown away by the quality of art people are turning out in the digital space and I promptly ate my words.

Since then I started selling animated versions of my painted collages on Rarible and Opensea. I still love working with physical mediums, but I'm really enjoying incorporating animation into my collages since it makes my crazy collections all the weirder.

In a burst of inspiration I started a blog about NFT art on Medium which got the attention from someone who suggested I check out NFT Showroom and now, here I am in the hive ecosystem!

One more thing!

If you're an art person and happen to have/know/like kids, check out my dad's children's books. Over the last year I've devoted most of my work week to helping him publish and promote these. The first one I illustrated, but the second is illustrated by an amazing teen artist in Canada. We donate 100% of the money and don't take a penny for ourselves. There's also an option to buy one, give one, which allows you to purchase two books and we'll send one to a school or community center in need.
